Looks like you are in Lexington. There is a truly-LFS here on the north side of Cincinnati where the dude sells all sorts of used filter equipment. I got a couple of Fluval 305s from him for $60 each. New at Petsmart they are $169.
Check around on craigslist or ebay for used or new filters - you can get a great deal. If you go Fluval you want the x05 series. The brackets that connect to the top of the aquarium are MUCH nicer, more reliable and easier to install. If you buy an x04 series, find someplace to order the 05 brackets.
I've never used the HOT filters. My personal opinion is get something with a basket like the Fluval or the Rena. With all apologies to the old school Eheim fans out there - much easier to maintain.
So I decided on the HOT Mag 250. There is not a tremendous amount of room for media but plenty more than the Aquaclear 70 that was on that tank. Dumped in the ceramic I had in the Aquaclear and added about a cup more of Matrix media, and we are in business. Great filter, very quiet. Only get occasional "slurping" and "bubbling" noises.
Only complaint is that the exhaust tube is not long enough. On my tank, it barely is submerged with the diffuser attached. But this is not a big enough complaint to really matter in my opinion. So far its fantastic!
