these 2 places are both good. not at all like the local chains, petco or petsmart.
emmons also has lizards and birds too.

this shop is in leicester, u.k., it is called f.i.s.h. (friends in soggy homes)it specilizes in community fish, which may sound strange, but they won't sell you a baby tankbuster that will out grow your community tank. all the staff are so caring about the fish they sell, ie., asking questions about the tank the fish are going in etc. it is superb for a small shop and i have never had a 'sick' fish from them. A1 SHOP.

i personally like
beverly's pet center, in hollywood fl
www.beverlyspet.com

i've seen them refuse to sell fish to people who just don't have the space for them. the prices are reasonable, and they try to inform you about the fish you buy.

Dayton Ohio Petshops

Jacks Pets
2702 S. Smithville Road
Dayton, OH 45420

African Cichlids-many of them. Some staff very rude. Not much SW selection. Items still overpriced. As with all jacks, can custom order fish (check petsolutions.com for availability).

Jacks Pets (next to Walmart)
8522 Springboro Pike
Miamisburg, OH 45342

Staff is nicer, although less knowledgeable than other stores. Seems to be dirtiest of Jacks I have been to. Small SW selection. Good FW selection. Seem to get rarer plecos.

Jacks Pets
3286 New Germany-Trebein Road
Beavercreek, OH 45434
www.jackspets.com

At one time, the manager was really rude. Since then been let go, and store seems to be still going down hill. Issues with tank disease, they try FW plants but fail. No too knowledgeable. "Cycle" fixes everything.

Jacks Pets

Brand New (opened 13-JUN-2007). Because being new, sqeaky clean. LOTS of SW tanks (at opening, not all filled). Lots of FW tanks, NO african cichlids. Live Rock vat - not seen at other Jacks. Same Jacks prices. Staff was new, but had some good management, seemed like.

Aquariums Etc
888 E. Franklin St.
Centerville, OH 45459

SW only. Excellent knowledge. Decent to good prices, sells used equipment. Good selection of small and large sw fish. Good sales. Sometimes inconvenient hours. Can take SW or FW fish if need to get rid of them - call ahead. Only one man here - Joel. Can custom order even the most rare fish.

Gerbers

Wholesaler too, so staff might not be accommodating. Large facility, however very dirty with stagnant water on floor. Sells used equipment. Does not get custom orders in very well. Ok prices, nothing too rare though. Knowledge can be misleading (2 clowns and 2 damsels in 10G). Water quality questionable.

Petsmart
2028 Miamisburg Centerville Rd
Dayton, OH 45459
www.petsmart.com

A smaller petsmart, VERY friendly staff. Fish selection ok, FW only. Prepackaged plants only. Minimal SW materials, lots decor. Tanks seem healthy thus far. Not the best knowledge, but have stated they dont know something at times I have been there. Have Dp and Ottos. Pricematch to website.

Petsmart
2500 N Fairfield Rd C
Dayton, OH 45431
www.petsmart.com

Difficult to pricematch to website. Larger store, FW only too. Had massive tank failure before, but they shut down the display and sales of fish while treating tanks. SW materials minimal. Knowledgeable people are dwindinling here - they move on so be careful.

In a small town north of Calgary, there is an awesome shop called GONE BUGGY in Carstairs. Jeff the owner is extremely knowledgeable, the tanks clean and healthy and if there is anything you want that he doesn't have he will order it in for you. He has great prices, currently he has 2 6-8 in Bichir's (sic) for 24.98 each.

Good selection of freshwater especially african cichlids. They even have a "mini" pond set up inside with a few koi in it. Glanced at saltwater area and seems pretty well stocked and maintained. Staff is very helpful and knows what they are doing. Also has a great amount of tanks and accesories. Not a lot of live plants though.

The best fish store I've seen as far as selection goes is in my old hometown. They have a lot of cichlids:

Atlantis
1229 8th Ave
Terre Haute, IN 47804
(812) 232-7387

The best one where I live now - the Quad Cities (Davenport, IA, Moline, Ill.) is probably:

Roe Aquarium
4422 11th St
Rock Island, IL 61201
(309) 788-7153

And:

Aquatic Environments
730 E Kimberly Rd
Davenport, IA 52807
(563) 445-3687

I'm willing to drive several hours to get a fish, make a trip out of it. I bought a Polleni at Atlantis and transported it 300 miles. I'm sure there have to be some stores with a huge selection in the Chicago area and northern Illinois. I just have to find them. I was disappointed with the stores in Iowa City, only one that was decent.
