Has anyone tried, or has it ever been commonplace to use crushed lava rock as a biomedia in a filter? I know people use large pieces of lava rock in tank as an efficient media for nitrifying bacteria to colonize - just curious whether its at all efficient in a filter itself.

you can do that with a larger filter - you'd have to have mesh or sponge in place in front of the lava rock so it doesn't get clogged with physical debris.

don't they sell stuff like that for aquaclear filters? not lava rock exactly, but a white rock that has the same purpose.

I use the lava rock. I have some biomax media that came with my filter of course...but there is lava rock mixed in and I use in on other tanks as well.

It's really fun to smash it with a hammer. I love going outside to do that. And I keep hoping someone will walk up and ask, "What are you doing??" So I can say, "Making biomedia." I like confusing laypeople.

Where's a good place to get lava rock? Is it available at places like Home Depot or Home Hardware in the home & gardening department? Isn't this type of lava rock specially treated with chemicals? Or is there a specific type of lava rock for aquarium use? Thanks in advance for any information.

At least you weren't going to tell them, "I'm appeasing the voices."
