Keeping Robin's off cars?? A Poo Situation...

We have robins that have been sitting on our car/truck mirrors and causing a horrible poopy mess all over the mirrors and down the side of the cars. Not just any particular one of the 4 cars sitting outside, but all of them. It's been doing it for 3 years in a row. Needless to say, this behavior is going to ruin the paint on the cars and we just can't let it continue. It's as though they are fighting with themselves in the mirror and reflection on the windows. But, there are several out there doing it. I will see a bird on several of the cars/trucks at a single time.
Here is a list of what we have tried in order...
1. We covered the mirrors with plastic bags and paper bags. He just sits on the bags and continues to do his poopy thing.
2. We put out a fake owl....he precedes to poop on said owl.
3. Draped large, fake rubber snakes on the mirrors, on roof, and on windshield area...he ignores them
4. Put strings of aluminum pie plates out to "clank" in the wind. Drove me nuts, had no effect on the birds.
5. Shooting at it with a pellet gun. He takes off and comes back when a human is no longer sitting there.
6. My husband finally shot one of them with birdshot and killed it. It worked for 2 days, then they are back at it. Too many of them.

It's hard to shoot them, you have to wait for them to fly off the vehicles and away from the house so as not to damage vehicles. I know I'm a stay at home/work from home mom, but dang...I can't sit out there with a pellet gun all day long waiting on them to come. I found where one was nesting in our shed and removed the nest before they had it finished but this didn't concern them much. We don't have an garage/barn to put the cars in. We can't put full car covers on because of wind. We basically live in open flat farm land, wind can tear off a cover in no time.

Just a note: I am an animal/wildlife lover and for the first 2 years I would not let any one take shots at the birds. I just figured they would go away after nesting. Last year...they were here until August doing their poopy thing. I'm done! There is some damage on my mirror from them and you can see on my son's truck where the poo has damaged the top coat of the paint.

Shooting them is more of a challenge then one would think. They take off to the woods where it is hard to track them, or over to the "safe" area's where they have figured out we can't take a shot (our house, cars, and the neighbors). If you are sitting out there, they avoid the cars. Plus, we are in the country..there are SO MANY BIRDS..even robins and you are never sure if it's one of the ones on the vehicles, or just one passing through. Poisoning is NOT an option. There are too many other critters to worry about and a robin's diet is not one you could easily "feed".

Has anyone else had to deal with this? Any suggestions??:1zhelp:

Have you tried adopting a stray cat? My cat Stripes was a pretty good bird-hunter (wiped out robins and such all the time). Just be ready to take care of the gifts (dead birds) they will leave on your doorstep as a 'thanks for letting me live here' gift.

Maybe give them something else to sit on? Perhaps an electrified wire? (sorry, I don't like robins, not since one took a dump on me)

I've adopted 6 stray cats. Unfortunately, they just sit at the windows INSIDE the house and "chatter" at birds. They are even more worthless as mouser's inside the house. lol

I can't have outside cats due to a neighbor who shoots anything with 4 legs who gets close to his property. He's old, nasty, and will probably live for-freaking-ever. We are in the country but he is our only "close" neighbor. Any stray that is dropped off or wanders up is dead in less than a week. And usually choose to crawl under our deck to die. The cops can't do anything because we don't actually see him shoot the cats. Just hear it and find them dead.

Thank you for the suggestion though. There are plenty of other things out there for them to roost on, trees, tv antenna, barns, chicken coops, sheds, clothes lines, nope..they want to fight with the other birdies reflected in the mirror and windows of our cars and potty all over them. It's amazing just how much poop these birds can muster up in one day.

hmmmz... what about an automatic movement-activated water system? Basically motion activated sprinklers to scare them off?

Park in a different spot?? LOL, I dunno can't think of anything to keep birds from landing where they want....good luck.

bird spikes. :lipssealedsmilie:

imagine the looks you'd get loading your groceries up.

Ya, that's pretty much it!

We moved cars to grass on opposite side of house last year, they found it and did their poopy thing. I guess I'm going to have to put on full camo gear and go sit in waiting for them. :D

I like the bird spikes idea... you'll never get a ticket again :D

Poison the birds as long as it isn't illegal. That or shoot them is about the only way to get them to stop. We have a horrible pigeon problem here and it only takes a couple well placed pellets a week to keep the masses out of my backyard. They are very smart. Kill a few of them and they wont come in your yard. It is funny. You will walk out back by my pool and you can see them in the neighbors yards but they wont be in ours.
