I decided to toss in a couple mini puffer fish in my tank. My question is, once I add them to my main tank, will they ever actually puff up at all? I think it'd be interesting to see. For the record these are the mini ones that top out at under an inch, not the larger more aggressive ones.
Umm... You mean dwarf puffers? They're still agressive. Kind of wondering when your chinese algae eaters are going to start their slaughter, probably on the biggest fish in the tank, 5" opaline gouramis.

I agree. They will harass just about any other fish to death. I got three in a ten gallon with an eclipse hood it works well because I got one male and two females. Feed them plenty of snails and bloodworms !

i wish there were big warning signs about puffers. all kinds.
1) they need a special diet. meaty things. frozen things. live things. crunchy things.
2) they need more space than your average fish. even dwarf puffers need 3 gallons per fish.
4) a lot are picky about water parameters. dwarf puffers are exclusively freshwater.
5) AGGRESSIVE. size does not matter. if you want your existing fish to keep their fins and such, dont get puffers.
fyi, theres a great forum for puffers (thepufferforum.com) that will tell you just about anything you want to know about caring for these fish. i highly recommend you read up first before deciding to keep these fish
