I think they play, I also think one of the Oscars at work is out to get me (seriously, he is always splashing me randomly).
I read an article once (I forget where) about training goldfish and oscars to play soccer, football, etc using a ping pong ball. We also had an episode with a small plastic cat toy ball being "tossed around" by the oscars after a 4 year old tossed it in the tank.
And sure, we like to assign human emotions/actions to animals which may or may not experience them, but that being said, almost everything humans do can also be trained to survival and reproduction in some capacity as well
