Is there any advantage to adding stress coat once a week to an aquarium?

I see no reason to use it if you are using a different water conditioner such as Prime. What do you currently use to treat your tap water?

Just straight tap water for years, never had any problems so I never thought to ask. A buddy of mine said he thought it helps with coloration, so should I be using some kind of water conditioner or stress coat when doing weekley water changes?

if your tap water contains chlorine or chloramine, you should always be using a dechlorinating product. it will improve the health of the fish and of the tank overall. if you are on well water, then no need.

You can smell the chlorine in my county water sometimes. I don't want to know what would happen if I forgot my Prime.

All you need in a freshwater aquarium is a water declor during water changes or when topping off the tank. If you are using a quality product like "Prime" stress coat is not necessary. If stress coat is used in excess it can create a film on the top of the surface of the water that will limit the oxygen gas exchange for your fish.

Would be good to know the 'makeup' of your tapwater. Not critical though. Most use a quality water conditioner (Prime, AmQuel+, ect.) on tapwater to cover a number of bases w/ a single product. "T"
