Installing a tank in a wall

I absolutely LOVE my 55 gallon tank, but it is a space eater. My hubby had a great idea to cut a hole in the wall and put the tank permanently there. I was wondering if anyone here has undertaken a project of this magnitude, possibly knows someone who has, or maybe has seen a site with info about completing a project like this. Thanks in advance :)

it really depends on where and what is in the wall and whats on the other side. if its simply drywall and 2 by, you could cut the hole out and rebuild the structure to accommodate the tank then run some crown molding around and your set.

this is a reef version but yours should be similar.

As long as the wall isnt a load bearing wall you can do whatever with it... I wouldnt go cutting a 4 foot hole through studs on a load bearing wall or you could have bigger issues down the road.

Even if the wall is load bearing it can be done by installing a header into the wall above the area of the tank area

You also need to consider what is on the other side of the wall. I have a friend who put a tank between her living room and office. All of the hardware and "stuff" was on the office side. The effect from the living room was stunning. Keep in mind that the tank has to be supported by more than just the width of the wall.

Also, allow adequate space for the mechanicals and to do maintenance, plus the lighting. If you have a infrequently used room on the other side, storage/ laundry, things could be a snap. Or, you could frame out from the wall and put bookcases to either side, or enclose a nook.

Yeah, as others have said you got to have a wall with a room behind it you dont mind having all the equipment and tank access in. A closet or utility room on the backside would be perfect so you dont have to do anything that looks fancy. You could build it so all the access is from the main room, but you still need to accommodate it sticking through to the other side of the wall unless you tank is really skinny and wall is thick.
