Hi all,

Over the weekend I was in the local Petsmart for some supplies. I never buy fish from them or other big chains, normally, but I always look to see what they have out of curiosity.

I glanced to the fish wall and noticed that 75% of the tanks were completely empty which struck me as odd. Turns out they were clearing their inventory to remodel the fish system.

Anyhow, in one tank, there was a lone juvenile JD with gorgeous colors and the appearance of a very healthy fish. I asked the manager what was happening to the fish not sold by the date they set to clear everything and she said they'd transport them to another store etc. Looking at this beautiful fish, I took pity on it and thought, why put him (or her) through that nonsense, which would prob end in death for him.

Fortunately I have some empty tanks I'm in the process of setting up. I've never kept a JD before but I have read up on them in the past. I've read everything from they're violent maniacal killing machines to docile peaceful fish. I know how cichlids are and each has its own personality though (I'm talking about the good ol' regular JD here too btw, not the EBJD).

So, taking the chance, I bought him and have him in QT in a 20 long all by himself. Seems happy and healthy.

Here's my question: I have 130 gallon tank that I think this fish could live in... but I'm not going to take any chances and would like opinions.

This tank is primarily SA Eartheaters, mostly adult sizes, Threadfin Acara, Satanoperca Jurupari, S. Daeman, Super Red Sev, and some juvenile Red Head Tapajo...

The Tapajos are my *prize* fish, I love those guys and I'm growing out a handful of them. The other fish completely overshadow the JD in size and given that he's prob 2 inches at most, I can't see how he'd hurt the Acaras etc... and they're so peaceful I don't see them bothering him. I also have a Blue Acara in there as well.

So, do I give him a shot in the big tank after QT or no?

I have a 36 and 46 bow sitting empty that I have on stands that just need to be filled and cycled. Should I instead put him in the 46 by himself? I also have a pair of Rainbow Cichlids and a Firemouth that's tough as nails in a different tank, I was thinking I could put them with the JD in the 46 for now and have a CA themed tank...

So, should he go in the big tank, would he be ok with those fish and vice versa, should I put him in the 46 with the other CA fish I mentioned, or will he beat on them too much?

Or should he just have the 46 all to himself, and maybe pick up another compatible CA fish or two?

Or, I could re-home him. I just wanted to get him out of that situation and he really is a good looking fish. Would like to keep him if possible but will do what's best. I suppose there's the possibility that he's incredibly docile too but I won't know until I add someone to his tank.

What would you do?

Think I would try to find a female with "the blue gene" and attempt mating until you come up with electrics.

No one? I'm surprised. That's a pretty popular breed of fish and I know a lot of people have kept them............

Mark, I'm no SA cichlid expert, but I'd try your new JD in your 130g tank. If you've got space and decor to support him in there, why not.

I know in a busy Oscar forum I participate at, some have tanks with an oscar and a JD in them. Both introduced as juveniles.

30 years ago we kept a JD with blue acaras & firemouths. My memory is a bit fuzzy but the acaras bred all the time & they were "kings" of the tank although the JD could hold his own. We eventually moved him to another tank, I think when the FMs started breeding too.

Just have a back up plan if things get out of control

I had some electric blue and blue gene JDs in a 100 gal, for a few months with some angelfish, convicts, some yoyo loaches, BN plecos, and lets see, some black neons. Was a very peaceful tank, but I sometimes get bored with my tank, so got rid of everything and started over. Those JDs were very well behaved. If they have room to call their own, they wont bother anyone.

My JDs are good citizens and despite being on the 5"-6" range they leave the full grown gambusias alone. I'd warn you to be careful trying to introduce a new fish in an established cichlid tank. Regardless of the JD's actions WWIII may breakout over territory. Some rearranging would help with that issue.

Last summer I put 6 JDs in a 175gal Vat outside. They hide in the rocks and flower pots on the bottom and never came out not even to feed. I tossed in a dozen odds and ends Endler females and the JDs never bothered them or their fry. I finally had to move them back inside as they were getting very thin!

Hmmm interesting! Sounds like he would prob be just fine in my big tank. He'd be a runt compared to most of the eartheaters in there anyhow. They all seem pretty calm when I have added new fish so I think they'd leave him alone. Was just thinking about when he grows a bit. Guess I can try it and keep an eye on him.

I've kept 2 jd's so far, my first was a bully that I bought around 5-6" and killed everything in the tank back before I kind of knew what I was doing. My current JD grew up in a 55 and then 125, and hasn't had any issues with fish like tiger barbs and giant danios, but picked on the much larger geo's endlessly. 1/4 of my geos is still alive, but even he is wicked beat up from the JD.

I definitely think it could work, but you have the move him in small. I'd be worried about him messing with the slower and flashier cichlids in the tank once he gets bigger, but for now it should be ok. Once you see any aggression Id start considering moving him, and fin nipping can quickly turn to full out killing
