im this close to throwing away this hobby.

I would do 25% today and then 25% in a few days. After you add your prime to the new water, let it set for a few minutes (not nessacary but it can't hurt) You can even add some prime to the water that's already in your tank before you do a water change :) I second all the votes for Prime being the best water conditioner.

I would shoot for 30%, and I would use enough prime to dose the entire tank just for good measure because it's such great stuff and it can't do HARM to add that much.

Consistent as far as every 1, 2 or even 3 weeks. Daily or every other day is not necessary in normal conditions. He's been doing super frequent water changes for some time now based on his previous issues. That can be frustrating when it's the only advice anyone can give you to rectify a problem.

He asked why he needs to do water changes when his parameters are good. I took that as more of a general question rather than about his immediate situation. I agree with you whole-heartedly, I just want him to know that he needs to develop some sort of a WC schedule when this problem is solved, even if it's only once every 2-3 weeks.

I'm not so fortunate... two words... Marbled Pim.

Actually , Prime does lock ammonia.. it locks H ion to NH3 turning it into NH4 a less toxic ammonia.

(loose definition of lock) ;)

water changes are probably one of the most important maintenance factors in fish keeping.
while in the past it was acceptable to do water changes once ot twice a month..
over time it was discovered that TDS increases and can the simplest way to eliminate this was thru water changes.
how often and how much often depends on stock and stock quantities.

you can get by with as little as 10% per week if you have low stock quantities and the stock is tolerant.
in some cases when raising fry you will need to do at least 10% daily to maintain high water quality.
some fish like discus usually benefit with larger and frequent water changes 25-50% 2-3 X weekly.

as you know pH is largely not a factor in the health of the fish. gh btw is a measure of the general hardness and help to determine if you have hard or soft water. which can have an effect on the fish. fish may be sensitive to metals in the water. pH in this case can make these metals more soluble to the fish and more detrmental if you have say acidic water.

Again these are varialbes which may or may not affect your fish.. part again due to the fishes sensitivity to these.

when getting new fish froma fish store.. you may have just gottne poor stock.

I cannot tell you how many tetras and tiger barbs dies for not apparent reason.
in water tha can sustain more sensitive fish like Discus.

all in all it may have been a factor you did not contribute too.

my suggestion.. try a different place for your stock.

Alec:
Make sure to keep us posted and updated, just in case I was wrong and it's something else.

oh i will.

its just ive had both these conditioners the whole time ive owned a fish tank, and my fish have always been fine..? but ill stll switch to prime.

I do 5% daily. (That is one 2.5 gallon bucket from petsmart) I feel this keeps conditions as stable as possible, minimizes stress on both me and the fish, and just works for me. In a situation like yours, I would up it to 10-15% daily, until everything is stable. The most important thing is to find a schedule that works for you, and changes enough water to keep up with your bioload. The more frequently you can do waterchanges, the better.

30% of 50 gal is 18 gal.
