i need help identifying my fish!!!

She said she's had him for 4 years and hasn't gotten much bigger. Its a 60tall lol. Maaan. Do u think it would attack a painted turtle.the turtles not very big. Still growing. Like 5 inches.

It's a Gar,either a Florida or an Alligator. I'd need to see a better shot of its nose, preferably from above to be sure. Both will feed on any meaty food such as smaller fish, frozen or freezedried shrimp, etc. They both get too big for the average home tank, although the Florida is doable in the largest standard tanks. Alligators get 9' long.

Aww man. :( I just wanted the tank for my turtle but had to take the fish. Dang it. So if at any point I need to get rid of this monstrous fish lol any ideas on where to take it?? I live in michigan.

she may have meant 'alligator gar', which in that case you will want to give him to a zoo. these gars get much too big to be kept in home aquaria.

She may have meant alligator gar, but I don't think that's what it is. Looks more like a tropical gar.

Gar under 10" can be difficult to 100% ID, but your best chance is to post on aquaticpredators.com.

Either one will get way too big for your tank.

She's either lying about having him for 4 years, or he's severely undersized due to neglect.

And I'd be more worried about the turtle attacking him than the other way around. Gar are not aggressive, they're just aggressive feeders.

That's a Florida Gar. I have one and they don't get much bigger than 18" in captivity. If yours is 4 years old and has been living in that tank it's whole life then it's stunted.
