I have regular aquarium gravel in the tank and decided to make a sandpit for them. I dug a circle in the gravel and filled it up with sand. They are completely ignoring it! I just moved a plant closer to it, thinking they may want some cover if they are going to go near the sand. So far nothing - they sit at the edge but won't go in the sand.

Oh well, I tried!

haha, just give them some time to get used to it =) they like to graze the substrate for food and theres most likely non on the sand yet. also its just unfamiliar to them right now.

hmm

did you line the sand pit or anything? Chances are the sand and gravel will become intermixed.

No, I didn't think about that till afterwards. This is only my qt tank, so the cories only have 1 more week in there anyway!

Right now it is dark but by the light of the moon I can see in the tank and all 4 cories are resting on the sand! It is so nice when you can make a fish happy! LOL!

You'll probably find them sleeping in it, or with their heads buried in it in no time!

Ah Webcricket! We must of posted at the same time -- yup they are sleeping on it right now!

Makes me think I should put some sand in my main tank but I really don't want an all sand tank. I guess I need to think of a creative low sided container for 1/3 of the tank. Hmmmm, any ideas???

I don't have sand, but I have a super fine gravel (any finer and it would be sand). When I set up my newer 20, I put a layer of the fine gravel down first, putting more on the right side. Then I put regular sized gravel over 2/3 of the bottom, leaving that final 1/3 on the right side as just fine gravel. I find my cories tend to rest there and no where else in the tank, so they must really like it. There has been some mixing of the gravel, but not much really. Perhaps in your main tank you could push gravel out of one corner and replace it with sand?

I have made a sandy area in my tanks before using a "clean, unused" bottom dish from a terracotta pot. Just bury it in your gravel, and fill it up with sand.

Of course, in time, the sand will mix with the gravel because the cories will dig in it and throw it everywhere.

What a great idea! I'd like to try that for my cory's. Is there a special kind of sand for this purpose?

I used play sand that I got from Home Depot. Do a search and you'll find out which sands are OK to use.

Good Luck,

Michele
