Hey everyone out there :D
I was wondering what are all the hybrid cichlids and how they were created.
I am curiious about know which species are true and which aren't because I feel that fish are Gods creation and he evoled them to what they are and man shouldn't try to change that. It's just like plastic surgery. Thanks everyone :dance

Well there are some hybrid fishes that are man-made....and i guess to do this they force the fish to mate? Flower-horns, for expample. And jelly-bean parrot fishes... but those are artificially dyed as well which is a whole other topic!
Other fish of different species just mate on thier own to produce hybrids. Africans, for example. You can partly say its your fault by putting them in the same tank together, but for example with Malawis they are all from the same lake, and hybridization, although very rare, i'm sure does occur in the wild. This goes on to produce new strains and variants of fish. All in all, its not a bad thing. But in the aquarium community it is generally frowned upon to let two different species breed and produce hybrids. This will procude a fish that looks like one or the other or both... and if ever bred will cause the offspring to be a whole mix of things. Thats not what you want when you go to breed a specific fish.
Although hybrids are not favorable, they are not any less of a living creature. They must be loved just the same!
If you dont want hybrids... then take care to not mix together two species that might breed.
And it is definately impossible to list all the different possible hybrids. There are so many!

Blood Parrot x Texas Cichlid
Jaguar Cichlid x Convict
Jaguar Cichlid x Texas Cichlid
Jaguar Cichlid x Red Devil
Jaguar Cichlid x Salvini
Texas Cichlid x Jack Dempsey

Texas Cichlid x Salvini
Convict x Red Devil
Convict x Jack Dempsey
Convict x Nicaragua Cichlid

Theres more but I cant think of any at the mo, I can post pics of most of these ;)

Hybrids are okay, but they shouldn't ever be put into circulation around the public... some are okay because their obvious... BP and flowerhorns for example... but others aren't so much (not cichlids, but something like a guppyXendler hybrid). IMO, you should keep hybrids from your tanks to your self or ONLY give them to people who can be trusted to keep them away from the public just as yourself.

There are many reasons to not produce hybrids... one is to keep the species bought at the petstore as pure as possible. I know I don't want hybrids in my tanks, I want pure species fish... and I don't want to have to buy wilds to get it.

Just about every CA cichlid willl cross breed with another CA the same way every Malawyan and Victorian will cross breed with one another from their lakes. All CA originated from the same Cichlasoma blood line and all Malawyan and Victorian oringated from the Haplochromine line and so they are genetically closely related and will cross breed given the opportunity. SA and Tanganykan cichlids came from multiple blood lines and so not all but only certain closely species will cross breed. I have yet seen confirmed cross breeding between CA and SA,Tanganyikan with Malawyan, African with American, or mouthbrooder with egg layers despite the rumor (mostly likely false) that BP is a cross between CA Midas and SA severus.

I am little surprised to hear that convict can cross with Nic because Nic stand out from all other CA in laying non-sticky eggs. I would like to see a picture of the convict Nic cross.

Yeah the midas x severum is pretty unbelieveable although my male gold severum is getting quite friendly with my female BP's.I'll see if I can dig up the pic of the con x nic, now that I think of it I think it was posted a while back on this forum.
