I have been cleaning a second-hand 77g tank and read to use vinegar to get rid of the marks on the glass. The marks ended up being on the outside only and the vinegar did nothing for them anyway. There was a styrofoam/concrete rock background on the inside of the back wall which I removed. I also resealed the back two 90 degree corners with GE Silicone last week.

What do I use to get rid of any possible trace of the vinegar from the back wall of the tank?

if you mean smell? try just running carbon in the water filter run it full of water and empty of fish,.. besides after normal rinsing there should be no real trace of the vinegar,. and it should not hurt the fish,.. but the smell may linger on the stryo,.. i use pickle buckets from burger king to water my animals, and use them for tanks use,. when i first get them they smell bad,.. but it goes away after a few weeks but i set them out in the sunshine and let them stand for a while with water in it in the sun,..

I agree with baking soda idea, and then just lots of rinses to dilute the leftover vinegar to negligible levels. A minimum of 3 is what analytical chemists use, and I use it at home as well as while at school ^_^

you cleaned just on the outside?

vinegar is water soluble. rinse it a couple times and you'll be fine.

Ahh - thanks so much! The vinegar actually dried on so I'll be sure to do those rinses tonight and hope to get this monster aquarium (to me) up and running this weekend! Wooo hooo!

I'd give it a good rinse....and call it done.

any traces of vinegar will be SO diluted by 77G of water that it's insignificant.

FWIW, I use muriatic acid to clean hard water stains...it's nasty stuff, WAY more acidic than vinegar, and...I just rinse well.

I put papertowel soaked in vinegar on the inside wall (hoping to erase the 'creep' marks - but they were on the outside and the vinegar didn't help anyway. :irked:

I removed the styro/concrete rock background from the inside wall and scraped off all silicone with a razor blade.

Perfect - thanks again and I may check into a bit of muriadic acid for the outside back wall - although it's not very noticeable once the coloured background plastic paper is on! :)
