How in the world do you catch a fish out of your tank without having to move and mess up all the decorations in the tank?...Especially in a 55+ gal. tank where theres a divider in the middle of the top of the tank, makes it hard when they swim away from you to the other side!

what fish?

is your tank planted as well?

it's probably not what you want to hear but the quickest way is to just remove everything you can and then try to catch it.

In a heavily decorated tank with lots of hiding spaces and lots of plants, catching a fast fish is almost impossible.

I just upgraded to a bigger tank yesterday, and I had great success using a clear glass/pyrex bowl and a net. I would hold the bowl with one hand and chase them with the net right into the bowl and quickly lift the bowl right out of the tank!

I might try getting one of those fish traps but I'd rather just catch them with a net! I'm moving some platys and convicts into other tanks.

I have had luck putting a small bit of food in front of the net and get them when they come up for it

Thats not a bad idea. Theres nothing worse than chasing a fast fish around a huge tank (120g) with a huge net and that stupid center brace is in the way.
As always the normally placid aquarium fish has decided now that he is a swordfish and darts through the water as if he was being filmed by National Geographic - complete with music and all.

I have heard some folks use a clear acrylic sheet to section down the aquarium to make the chase space smaller.

Common problem!Drives you nuts! Trouble is, you could always get the one you wanted last week! I think the best method is a clear drinking glass, or jug, and a load of patience
Good luck!

i cut a clear plastic bottle, just below the neck, then put the funnel end into other bit.put few small holes in to let air out, then added some food in it.You can use different size bottles, depending on size of fish.Put in bottom of tank.I have caught loads of fish this way,and they dont get stressed out either.Just release the ones you dont want to catch.
