How many (small) mollies, platies, and (small) cories can I fit in 30 gallon?

ILOVEBETTAS

It's Cory Lover's cat!
And I don't mean big sailfin types for mollies, I mean like black mollies. And the cories will be under 2'' when grown. How many can I fit in there? I think I might just want it a simple livebearer tank.

There shouldn't be a substantial size difference between black mollies and any other color morph... the sailfin doesn't matter much either, not as far as length goes anyway.

You might not believe this, but I've seen a molly the size of a sharpie and the girth of a sausage. Huge. It was kept in an 80g aquarium with only a few other BW fish. A guy in Lancaster CA owned it, who I bought the 80g from.

Also keep in mind that some cories grow larger than the other species.

I would suggest sticking with platy's; you could comfortably house 12, while keeping the ratio 1m:2f. And also keep a group of cories oh, I'd say 8 of them.

Keep a wide and low cave (might have to custom build one with slate) because they all like to hide together.

Oh, also put in some aponogeton bulbs to grow some easy hardy low-light plants, and you're done.

So 12 platies and 8 cories? Sounds good to me. But can I keep only 1 or 2 mollies? Look at my little puppy face....! Oh, you can't see it.

What are some supplies that I would need for breeding? I want to breed them. But where would I sell them/give them away? I have a few friends with tanks, but not many... what should I do? This is not a rhetorical question... hee hee... PM ME LATER ANYONE, ABOUT THESE QUESTIONS! Or just answer right here!

You could buy all male platies to avoid breeding. I have a bachelor group of 6 housed together. They do pester each other occasionally, but nothing serious like fin nipping. As long as you keep the males in a large enough group to scatter their attention, they shouldn't be inclined to pick on any one fish in the group.

If you want to breed, it's easy, just buy a breeder net (I prefer the nets over the plastic containers) or setup a seperate tank for fry.

If you go the net route, pur some live java moss in the net and whenever a female is pregnant with a gravid spot (good that) just plop her in the net and take her out after she releases the babies. Then feed them powdered livebearer food.

If you run out of things to do with the babies, let the adults eat them. Circle of life type of thing lol.

As for mollies, I guess you could keep them, it's your tank and all, I'm just giving you an example of what I would do, and the size potential they have.

If you're planning on breeding, you'll need grow-out tanks and a plan with what you will do with the 20-50 fry your females can drop every 30 days. Once pregnant, females can store sperm for as long as a year (in my experience)...so if you decide to stop breeding and separate them from the males, they will continue producing fry long after.

I bred sunburst platy for a year and had only two breeding females at any given time. I had two 40 gallon grow out bins with various ages of fry. I gave them all away on freecycle either as pets or feeder fish since no stores would take them (too common a fish).

Unless you have a good way to get rid of fry, you will become overstocked in a 30 gallon very quickly, especially with multiple females. Just an FYI from my experience.

I bought a silver female molly that gave birth 3 days later. I was able to save 15 babies and I gave them to my local fish store. They gave me some fish food in exchange. If you plan on keeping some than I suggest a few hiding spots such as plants (fake or real) so they can hide in.

Good luck! :)

I'm sure my bettas would like molly fry!

That's a good idea for what to do with molly fry when I can't sell them all. But ANYONE, can I get 1-2 mollies PLEASE? I'll  if you say no!

Yes, all mollies (with the exception of baloon mollies) will grow quite large if properly cared for.

ILOVEBETTAS, you could get a couple of mollies. If you want to breed them then get 1 male and 2 females. If you decide not to breed then get all males.
