i just got a 55 gallon tank with 1 big 12 inch Pacu, for $150.

and i was wondering how long can i keep him in there? can he be there all his life??? He is 8 years old.

*sigh* Um... no, you can't keep him in the 50 gallon for the rest of his life, or, frankly, until tomorrow... at least do so with any sense of what the guy needs to live rather than merely survive. Lots of threads on this. Generally the recommended minimum for Pacus is 300 gallons. Sounds like he's already stunted.

Being 8 years old and only 12 inches, the Pacu is severely stunted and might be able to live in that 55 gallon alone. I am not too sure if it will grow anymore and you might make it but a 12 inch fish in a 55 gallon tank is not going to be too happy since it does not have too much room to swim.

*ding!* time's up....get that new and bigger tank ready....

Um.. sorry but uhh.. you are probaly going to have to dispatch of them they'll be so big in a couple of hours they won' be able to turn around. Check out this link http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51417 Oh and trust Debra Mark she is pretty much the only person who has pacu's alive for more than 3 months all the others die when they can't tur around.

you know how they have ranches for all the rottweilers that people buy and can't take care of.

they need one of those for pacu's

those poor animals

he is stunted but even if he's not going to grow any more he could live a lot longer i'd find a bigger tank for him if you can't buy one yourself (check on freecycler you might get lucky) try to find someone who can accomidate him he'd be so much happier with a little room to swim.

and then start researching what you want to put in your new 55---RESEARCH so you don't end up with the same problem again. oh and you probably have established bacteria colonies so if you can avoid it don't break it down just add the fish before the colony runs out of amonia food

Just wondering if a Pacu which is already stunted, might start to grow again if its put in a larger tank. If not, then maybe finding it a home at this point might be ok for whoever gets it. I mean a 12" pacu (if it doesnt grow any more) in a 180 gallon might do just fine right?

Poor pacus. They are very nice fish... friendly and intelligent I find.
