I am wondering  how to move my 29 gal and my 10 gal, we will be moving about 4 weeks from now:bday: and about 25 minutes away. Will my fish be ok without air or filteration for that long and do i have to set them up right away when i get to the new place. How much water do i leave in there, Do i leave all the fish in there during the move or bucket them. Anyone?????????

Hi,
I also have a 29 gallon that I moved a year ago. I bought a giant tupperware tub(think chest sized) and siphoned about half the water from my tank into it. I scooped up the fish with a net and put them in the tub. Make sure you put the lid on because 2 of my fish jumped out and died (they cleared over a foot of "wall" which I never imagined they could). I think the darkness would be less stressful anyways.
I took out all my plants and decorations but left in the gravel, and threw away the other half of the tank water. The tank is still heavy just with the gravel (not to mention awkward to carry) so I wouldn't leave in any water to make the tank as light as possible. For me taking the gravel out was not necessary and seemed like too much work.
The fish were in the tub (no filter and heater but you could if you wanted to) for over 2 hours, and they were fine (except for the two unfortunate souls who jumped out when I wasn't looking). I did make it a priority to set up the tank ASAP at my new place though. To be honest, it was my plants who never quite recovered from the shock of the move, and alot of them ended up dying.
I have rainbowfish which are quite resilient to change and stress. If you have a more delicate species you may want to make different arrangments. For me though, this worked fine, plus I can't really think of another way of moving a tank!
Good luck!

Oh man I feel your pain im moving soon too. I dont know how or WHO is going to help me move my tanks :( well at least I can move my BW tank without doing a thing :D

Move the tank LAST , and set up the tank at the new place FIRST :)

Also, in transport it is good to keep them in the dark (da-dum-dum!):joke:

Also, depending on the distance I would think about getting soem air-stones for the trip. I would also place them in a sealed bag (large one) in the tub/box to prevent spills, suicides, etc.

Also, don;t forget your priceless substrate and filter materials. Keep these is a sealed water container. You won't need all the substarate, but it's a good idea to keep some of it in water (add last/top to ensure this substarte is exposed to oxygen so it will continue to work for you after adding).

Lastly, I would defeinelty be mindful of pointing certain fish togetherand not overcrowding the bags. I would certainly consider using multiple bags depending on the numbers/size of the fish.

Good Luck!!

EDIT: Moving a tank with gravel/water left in it can be tricky and dangerous especially if you have rocks in it also. I never now if twisting the tank, tilting it, etc. will cause just enough stress :( Although 29G isn't too large, so...

wow u have quite a few tanks. i also have 2 betta tanks but those wont be nnothin. i guess we are getting a uhaul. i may be bring them in the car with me, and make sure to find a place at the new place real fast like and then refill. like i am doing a water change but not to refill for a while. It sounds like i should wrap something around the glass so they dont get stressed. This is such a pain. I want to get more tanks of course but then in 2 years we will have our house so we will move again.

I'd definately be keen to hear how things went (put every detail in if you could) as soon I'm going to have to move my 80G tank (bow-bow!) which I'm not looking forward to.

So yeah let us know how it goes.

I'm also very interested in this topic because at some point I will move to another state (at least 7 hour drive) and I'll probably have a 125g by then.
