I moved my hotwater heater to a new location (few feet away). Plumbers used new copper tubing to connect it. Now, the hot water that comes out of the faucets smells like burnt metal.

Is this normal? The move was done 2 days ago, the smell is still there. I rinsed my mouth after brushing, I almost gagged.

Thanks.

I thought when you installed a new water heater, that you needed to flush it to let it run a bit. I know this is not a new one, but perhaps that would help?

If it was just a few feet, couldn't they just have used some flexible line?

Sorry, I know I wasn't much help, just wondering since I too, need to install a new water heater early next year (the one in the house is original, from '87)

thanks for the reply. The house is 1 year old. Plumbing is setup with pex around the house, but the plumber suggested I use copper for the move.. He said it's more solid, better (for whatever reason).

hot water heaters/tanks should be flushed , usually yearly, sediment gets trapped on the bottom.
in many tanks this will affect the heating element(but depends on the design)

If the tank was moved.. the sediment may have been stirred up and this may result in the 'burned' smell.

have you tried flushing the tank?

Electric tank?

It could be result from flux when the plumber sweated the copper joints.

run the water or flush the tank(maybe both) I suspect the stuff is in the pipes after filling the tank and now in the lines...kind of like a water change lol....was tank flushed after re installed?

You ought to soak in a bathtub full of that water, and then go out walking around.... When people ask "What's that metallic smell?!" then respond "I am IRON MAN!". That'd be really cool.
