Help with a new Magnum 350

I am setting up my brand new 75 gallon tank. I put together my Magnum 350 Pro canister filter, but I am having some problems.

I am a complete newbie to canister filters so any advice is appreciated. My problem is that when I turn it on, the canister drains to half empty and doesn't refill. Also, there is no water coming out of the return hose.

So... Firstly, I want to make sure I have it set up correctly. The instructions were quite limited. Maybe I have the hoses reversed? (i.e. intake on the outflow and vice versa) Which hose is the one that connects to the opening that aligns with the "tube" on the inside of the canister?

Next, there is a lot of extra hose curling about the back of the tank. Should I cut the hoses to remove this excess?

What is "burping"? I have read several references to it.

Thanks for any help/tips. I really want to get this thing up and running.
 
with most canisters to sart.. you will need to suction water up the intake hose and fill the canister...

This is called priming.. some have a priming mechanism while others require you to suck on one end to create a vacuum and start the flow..
 
The filter is supposed to be self-priming. I just wish that there were some more detailed instruction on it's setup and operation. Like I said, I'm not sure about which hose goes where.
 
On my magnum 350's the outflow and inflow connections are labeled on the top of the canister (they are black and hard to read in the dark) so make sure your lines are connected correctly. inflow being connected to the piece with the strainer on the end and the out connected to the piece that sits near water level.

the extra hose curling should be cut to size with just a little slack for wiggle room. the extra hose will decrease your flow a bit and just get in the way. just make sure you measure to where the canister will permanently sit before cutting.

as for priming, I make sure to fill the canister with tank water before reassembling then connect the hoses making sure both valves are open (inline with the hose) if there is water in the hoses this should create the suction and you will see air bubbles come out of the outflow while the canister fills. then fire her up!
 
Thanks for the help.

I don't see any labels on the top of my canister. I know which is the inflow and and outflow at the other end in the tank (short outflow near the surface, and long inflow with a basket thingy). Which hose should connect to the hole on top of the filter that aligns with the black tube inside the canister?
 
I had the same problem when I set mine up. I had hooked them up backwards. Just try switching them and see what happens. I switched them at the quick disconnects and it worked like a champ.
 
Thanks, I think the tubes are hooked up correctly. Maybe there is just too much air in the hoses. There were no instructions with it regarding filling the hoses with water.

(again, this is a brand new tank, so right now, I'm just trying to get things running so I can then start cycling it)

The filter is self priming. Fill it close to full before you close the lid. After you connect the hoses (the marking is hard to see so I marked intake with black marker on the valve knobs.) turn it on for a few seconds then turn it off. Any air should bleed out. Turn it back on and you're good to go. That's what works for me.
 
You have to do this thing systematically like a check list until you got it in you head.

First pull out the bright blue quick setup picture diagram that shows you step by step how to assemble and setup.

Assuming your setup, make sure you have filled the canister at lest 1/2 full of water

Then make sure the hose that is in line with the black tube you can see inside the canister is the out flow tube with the diffuser next the surface of the tank (NOT the intake in near the bottom of the tank. Make sure your hoses are not crossed behind the tank confusing you.

Make sure all 4 of your bayonet vales are open with the little blade handles in line with the hoses NOT crossed like a T.

Turn on for 1 minute then torn off allow air to bubble out then turn on again and repeat until most air is gone 90% the rest will come out on its own.

If its still not working and you have absolutely verified the steps above then you have assembled something internally wrong. Forgetting one of the two gaskets placements, the Main lid O-ring pinched or fallen. Verify that this O-ring and gaskets are in their proper place.

This canister was not designed human friendly it was designed to perform so it takes a little getting used to like a food recipe rathen then a TV dinner like other canisters.
