After re-reading the thread my question to you is.
How sure are you that you have a male in there and not two females?
The only real way to sex severums is by venting and smaller ones despite what some say are impossible to sex by any other way. Even then it is still quite tough depending on how small the fish is.
When they get larger and when they are in a tank with many others it gets easier because the dominant ones are always the easiest to pick out of the batch.
But when young finnage, coloring, attitude and even dominance are no help at all.
Others may disagree but this is what I have found from the past years of breeding these fish.
Two females will lock up and "fight" for dominance of the tank with the winner usually laying batches of eggs.
I have two female rotkeils in a 90 right now and the bigger one has picked her fair share of battles before laying her eggs. She still is laying them in a regular basis. Even without a male in the tank.
I give the younger smaller one credit though she doesn't back down and shes getting bigger closing the size difference between the two. It should get interesting in there when I finally introduce a male.
[edit] one more thing. back to coloring issue. The larger rotikeil has some very nice coloring. It would be very hard pressed to sex her by sight because her coloring is nearly as bright as any male I have seen.
