I got 2 of these from my LFS. They were advertised as water onions but from looking at pictures, I'm pretty sure they're not. Any ideas? The one in the picture is nice and healthy, the second one has some brown leaves, but they were like that when I bought it,so I'm hoping the new leaves will be healthy.

Oh, and I realize the white ribbon plants aren't aquatic now (thanks Petco) and they are now happily house plants. :) And for the record, the unidentified came from a small mom and pop shop, not Petco.

Looks like an amazon sword to me.

not an onion plant, it is def a type of sword

Oh ok, cool. It doesn't look like the other swords I have, but those are small. The other thing is when I got them, they both had long stems with little shoots on the end. Is that how swords reproduce? Can I plant those?

Yes, those are adventitious stalks. Baby plantlets will form from those. Once you see a few solid roots growing below the baby plant, you can cut it off. Or.. if you wait a little longer, you can gently pull/wiggle it off without cutting the stalk it's on.

To see how many kinds of sword plants (and hybrids) there are, just search using the name Echinodorus. There's a wide variety of them.. every one is gorgeous and easy to grow.

Most of them get very tall, by the way. But not all of them do.

Thanks guys. :)

I agree, they are very pretty. I'm guessing there were some onions in the tank before that sold- there were only about 4 plants left in there, and they probably just didn't all get labelled.

You can see my moss ball in the pic, too. I <3 my moss ball.
