HELP!!! 6" comet tried to eat an otto, STUCK

This exact same thing happened to me about 9 years ago, at the time i wasn't considering the compatibility with cold and tropical fish. However i saw it in time and was able to save the otto. i managed to pull him out with my hands, but i needed tweezers to push down the spines.

Which other community fish have this type of defense mechanism? I've never kept an Oto, so this is all new to me. Sorry about everything your going through, but experiences like this teach others for future occurrences.

Basically al plecos have those spines at the sides. I remember being poled by it when I had to move one. I hope you can manage to take out the oto before it's too late.

Thank you all, Jason came home from work to check on Dash the comet and he (dash) was finally able to shake and move the oto enough to spit the oto out. BUT, after having the thing stuck for 15 hours, his gills are still really dark red and he still has his lips stretched all the way out. Why is he doing that? does his mouth or lips hurt? Is that the reason why he still has his lips out??

cories also have this mechanism and have also been stuck in this way....

as far as the goldie... I am actually surprised he was able to spit the otto out, especially after you pushed it in more... not sure why he wont close his mouth, it could have had something to do with the otto in the first place, could have dislocated a blone in hos jaw.... I would say water changes are a must for this fish and maybe even target feeding to be sure he does get food in.

caity, as long as he is still able to move his mouth I wouldn't worry too much about him. you might want to move him to quarantine and make up a gel food for him. use one of the recipes for snail gel food in the invert section, just add powdered flake or pellet food to the recipe. you could even use an antibacterial food in the recipe. the gel food will be easier for him to get down past his injured mouth, and the antibacterial food will prevent infection. be sure to keep him in very clean water. he should recover just fine.
