We're in the process of setting up 2 55 gallon tanks and are trying to do it as inexpensively as possible. We decided to get natural gravel rather than the colored stuff (my toddler picked a bright purple, green, blue and pink mix for the 20 in his room, but hey, he's happy with it! :) ) and one our LFS has a bagged mix from a local quarry at a discount, but after seeing some threads here, we checked the prices at big hardware stores and ended up with pea gravel in a nice mix of colors and sizes. There were 2 bags that had been torn open but were still full looking marked down half off. It would have cost us about $50 for gravel at the LFS, but we paid only $2.50! I've spent about an hour washing it and there's still a bit of mud in the bottom of the plastic tub so I need to wash it a bit more, but making over $25 an hour washing gravel is all right with me! :)

Sounds like a great deal you got!

So pea gravel from lowes/home depot is aquarium safe? If so, I might go that route for my tank.

Do the "fizz test."

I bought 2 bags of pea gravel from home depot and it was obviously leeching large amounts minerals and chemicals. I instead went with some of the red flint gravel after I saw the pea gravel could harm my fish.

Uh, oh, what's a fizz test? I'd seen posts about using play sand, so I thought this would be fine.

even some gravel for aquariums will have an effect on PH . i bought some from a big pet chain and in that tank the PH is .6 higher than the rest of the tanks.

the fizz test is simply putting some vinegar on a select few rocks , if it fizzes it will alter the PH . usually its calcium so pick on some really white rocks .

Most of the whitish rock I saw definately looked quartz based, but I'll try a fizz test. As I was sorting through it, I spotted a piece of clam shell. I think it's freshwater clam. Should it be removed?

I wash all my gravel, then boil, and wash it again. If there was clam shell in it it wouldn't have much life left.

I noted that after boiling the gravel it was very noticeably cleaner than non-boiled. Much less dirt and bacteria.
