My Dwarf Gourami has developed a white spot on the top of his head, it has arrived over the weekend and I have no idea what it is. Was wondering if any one would have any ideas so I can go to LFS to get something today so it doesn't spread throught the rest of the tank .

It could be ick or it could be fungus. Ick appears as tiny distinct white spots and fungus can appear as a cloudy, whitish spot. I lost 75% of my fish once to fungus. Try looking up those diseases and see if one of them matches what you're seeing. Maybe you'll find some remedies online also. Good luck.

I don't think that it is hole in head or ich. Ich sounds like it is small white spots all over body. It doesn't have any mucus coming out of it. It is a large section on top of his head where all the colour had gone, it sort of looks like a scar. It has got bigger since the other day but I do not have another tank to put him in. It has now spread to his fin and taken part of that off. He still seems quite happy, he's eating and swimming around with the others, not doing anything unusual.

Quarantine as quickly as possible and Google the net for fish diseases. If you do not have a quarantine tank set up, get one of those one or two gallon terrariums that most LFS's have, treat the water you add with a conditioner and put your fish in. Add the medication you need along with a fungal salt and make daily partial water changes, but keep the medicine ratio up with the water you replace. Now I know that a lot of fish will be stressed out by this type of treatment, no heater and no filter but it is absolutely necessary to prevent the spread of the ailment to other tank mates. I have treated an Oto this way and they are extremely sensible to water changes. Even if you only put your fish in for two days, at least you have done something to start off the healing process!

Good luck!

You wouldn't be able to post an image would you? It is getting worse (reddening) or getting larger? ... ? :(

Its getting larger starting to spread along his spin. not getting red just getting bigger.

So I should take him out and put him in a tank with out heater or filter??? I can get a small tank for him to go into and will have a look on google now to find out what it is.

So after having a look on google it night be hole int he head but I can't find any sites with pictures if this problm so if any one knows of a site with pictures I would be very grateful and then I can make sure he gets properly looked after.

If it is hole in the head would this spread throught the other fish#? should I treat them all even thought they a re showing no signs?

It could be inoccent ulcers? Here is a site with some images for you (not great): http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/disease/ulcers.htm

However, ulcers are very risky b/c of the large risk of contracting other infections, if not caused by one to start with.

Also, here is a good site for diseases: http://www.tropicalfishcentre.co.uk/Diseases1.htm

I would recommend a salt-bath just as a precasutionary measure if nothing else... Obviously QT would be the safest bet

Also, foudn this image/site (see part 4): http://www.****************/information/signs_of_stress_and_disease.htm
