alright, im finally runnning out of my tetracolor flake food. im bout to go to petsmart to get more..what should i get? i have tiger barbs, and neon tetras, and platies.. i wanna make sure their colors stay vibrant.

Get them some frozen food too----Brind shrimp, Mysis, daphina, Blood worms, ect.

And some staple food (flake).

Well you have two choices:
1) buy what you have been using, if you like the results
2) http://www.kensfish.com can't go wrong there, if my new favorite one stop shopping.

Good luck

Yep, frozen is an occasional supplement that you can give them like once or twice a week.

I feed frozen food to my fish about half the time.
I spoil them. ;)

i feed my fish flake in the morning and frozen brine shrimp or daphnia in the evening. they love it, grow remarkably fast, and have great colors. can't go wrong there.

Something with the least amount of fillers as possible and no artificial dies is a good bet for your staple flakes. Since you say you're going to Petsmart specifically, here are the suggestions I have that are found in their store:

Aqueon Tropical Flakes
Nutrafin Max Tropical Fish Flakes
Nutrafin Max Spirulina Flakes
Hikari Spirulina Brine Shrimp (My absolute favorite, NO fillers of any kind and no dyes!)
Hikari Tropical Micro Pellets

One thing I definitely wouldn't recommend though is continuing with the Tetra brand. Chock full of lake colors. Lake colors don't dissolve in water, and obviously can't be processed by your poor fish's digestive system. It's also mostly corn, wheat, and soy, which are fillers intended to plug up the fish tummy, as opposed to being real nutrition. The less the fillers in a food (ie further down the list), the better! Often pure foods (ie 1 ingredient such as various types of shrimp, algae, etc) are referred to as treats, when in reality they can be the best thing to give your fish. I just switch off days on whether they're getting the meaty pure foods or the veggie pure foods, and I have fish with amazing color and long life spans. Hope this helps out some!

i agree with the others, a varied diet is best and just feeding one food isn't all that great for your fish.

my fishy larder holds:

frozen bloodworms, frozen mysis, frozen cubes of snail jello (the fish love this too!), shrimp pellets, algae wafers, NLS cichlid pellets, flake, and tetra crisps or granules (depending on what the lfs has in stock when i shop).

i also feed various veggies such as zucchini, cucumber, french cut green beans, and carrot slivers. this is mostly for the snails but the fish nibble too. one of my angels even has taste buds for zucchini, lol.

yep, the finkids eat better than i do!

nahrie, ill try those brands... before i read your post i got "omega one" freshwater flakes..and boy, do my fish HATE it..they dont eat like 70 percent of it..so im taking it back

and i also got top fin freeze dried brine shrimp. is top fin an ok brand? i remeber getting top fin bloodworms and my fish loved it..
