So I'm thinking this summer I'd like to try building a pond for, say, 3 comets. In other words around 100 gallons give or take. I'd need the liner (duh), but how much would I end up having to put down on the filtration? And also what is the mimimum depth I could go in a chicago climate? I ask this since I'd prefer for it to be as shallow as possible.

I have several wildlife ponds, but this would be my first adventure into ponds with fish in them.

Cheers!

Depends on what you want mate, i would recommend building the pond first then look at pumps. Dont forget that you can get a 100gph pump and filter but thats not a good idea. I like to be safe so in my pond i have a 6000lph pump and 4000lph filter for a 2500litre pond with about 8 fish in it. You also have to decide if you want a UV filter (you can get these separately but some filters have them built in). Do you want a pressure filter, gravity filter or in pond filter(in-pond not very good as far as i know)

Also you need to decide what quality pump and filter you want

Best quality <------- ( very reliable, very expensive to buy, pumps running cost is usually lower)
High quality <-------I would recommend this (reliable, expensive, running cost starts rising)
Medium quality <-------- Or this (kinda reliable, not too expensive, running cost up again) You get the idea
Low quality
Absolute crap quality

So there a lots of options you just have to look at and decide in relation to your money situation. As the saying goes though you get what you pay for

Hope this helps you decide what you want then you will get an idea of prices, i dont know about Chicago climate so i cant help u there

You could do it for under $200 easily, depending on what you wanted to do for landscaping. They sell kits at menards for like $80.00. It would come with a liner 8'x 10', and a 450 gph pump, and 3/4" black pvc hose. You would probably want to buy a prefilter, which is about $15.00. They also sell pressureized bio-filter all it is a plastic container with 2 sponges and bio-balls in the bottom, it was a switch that allows for backflushing. I would recommend at least 2 feet deep, and you would still need a floating heater $25.00 at farm and fleet, and/ or a bubbler w/ airstone to keep the ice open over winter.

These are the ones they sell at menards http://www.sunterrausa.com/gardens/products/models.cfm?SUBCAT=51

The first two are like $79.00-$99.00, and the double one is $149.00 to 199.00 depending on the time of the year. The double one comes with the pressureized bio-filter. Two liners for the pond, and a smaller narrower one for a waterfall/small stream.
