I was looking into sponge filters myself and I think they're supposed to be attached to air pumps running air stones. The site also said that a sponge filter could be hooked up to a powerhead.

I have a couple of those kits, and I think they only fit on penguin power heads. I used them for a while on a setup that had a reverse flow undergravel filter. I currently use the sponges from them to cover the HOB filter intakes on my fry tanks.

is that just the plug in or is that an actual filter?
That's the actual filter. You need an airpump, an airline and a standard airstone to run it. I have those, too.

Edit: Of course, you can also use a powerhead.
