Fishless Cycle - High Nitrites AND High Nitrates for weeks?

Kasakato - what are you getting at with the python suggestion? - are you suggesting I give up, empty out the water and put a snake in it instead :sad
I am tempted but the wife would rather hear me moan about bloody nitrates and nitrites for the rest of my life than have a snake in the house :D she has a snake phobia.

Oh I see :D I thought you meant a snake python - do you work for bigalsonline - if not you should do.
I'm fine - a dab hand at water changes now. Once it's cycled, one a week will be easy!!!!

Tested again tonight - a bit lower on Ites and Ates!!!!!! Fingers crossed - might be nearing the end.

I just saw on another thread that someone suggested adding a little salt to the water to help get the NItrates down - does anyone know anything about this?

The salt is for nirItes, not nitrAtes. Salt helps fish (something about preventing the blood from hemolizing..clotting..I think)
Only thing for reducing nitrAtes is to waterchange, however if your tap water contains NitrAtes already, you can get a nitrate sponge to put ino your filter. It looks kinda like a tea bag.

amonia converts to NitrItes, then to NitrAtes.

amonia is most toxic, NitrItes, not as bad, but still need to be reduced if above acceptable level as per your test kit, and finally NitrAtes to which some fish species are more sensitive. Like Black Ghost Knifefish for example.
I hope it answers your question.

Once you see nitrAtes, your tank is about cycled, but you must monitor at intervals for a month or so afterwards. Finally you'll just need to watch NitrAtes after the tank is 'aged.'
