Hello All I have a cycled 55g so I decided to do a goldfish tank. So I have 3 fancy goldfish in there right now and I had a few questions. When I got them I got some goldfish flakes and I am wondering some other foods to feed them and ways to prepare it(fruits or veggies).Another thing is how many goldfish can I put in?

Here are some pics

What a nice tank! Congratulations on having a nice set up for a first timer. Right now, I wouldn't add any more fish. The general rule is 20 gallons for a single fantail and 10-15 for each additional. (Some people on this forum would argue that that is too little space.) The fish that you have can get larger than you think under good conditions. Mine are the size of small bread and butter plates. It takes two hands to pick them up.

I am not a huge fan of the flakes. I use sinking pellets, but it really is a matter of personal preference. You can blanch veggies in the microwave for about 20 seconds, let them cool, and then use a veggie clip to put them in the tank. In your case, since you have no substrate, you can just drop them in an vac up the rest when they are finished. Mine get fruit and veggies as a treat as often as I have a few leftovers!

Alright thank you ya if I was to add another fish it wouldnt be for another few weeks. I got some spinach cucumber and zucchini will they eat those? And what kind of pellets do u use?

I raise orandas, so I have used Hikari (very good) and am currently using Omega One (also very good, and a little more readily available.) I don't know about spinach. I never tried it. Mine don't really love the zucchini. They especially like orange, peas and sometimes green beans.

Beautiful tank and fish! My goldies love spinach and zucchini. I blanch the zucchini, to make it softer, and just veggie clip baby spinach leaves to the side of the tank raw. They just tear pieces off and eat them as is. I also feed bits of orange segments, smashed strawberries, bits of water melon, (thawed) frozen peas & carrots that have been microwaved for a bit and cooled so they're soft, chopped up pieces of canned green beans, cucumber (just veggie clipped to the side raw), wilted kale, pretty much anything I've got on hand. They LOVE smashed strawberries, though. I usually just use the tops, after I've cut them off, and remove the greens- smash, and drop in tank. I second the high quality sinking pellets recommendation, or to make gel food, if you're that into it. There are a bunch of recipes on the web for gel food for goldies. I make it for my little lovelies, and they all scarf it down like crazy. :D

That is really pretty! A 55 would be a great size for 3 fancies for a long time, but it's possible you might eventually need an even bigger tank if you add another goldfish. I know they seem small now, but they will live many, many years, and get absolutely huge. Then suddenly that big tank is no longer so big. :)

I would stay at the stocking you are now. MAYBE one more, if your filtration is really really really good...but probably not. I make my fish gel food, but the pellets I like are API brand, and I agree with Somervell, pellets are better than flakes. I give my guys peas and cucumbers for treats, and "Sally's seaweed Salad" that I got from my petco. It's just sheets of dried seaweed that I veggie clip for them and they go NUTS for it, and I think it's like 5 dollars a package...mine has lasted for 2 months so far and I'm not even 1/4 of the way through it, and the bag is resealable.

Congrats on the new tank! :)

Thanks for all your help. I ended up putting another little guy in. I wasnt planning on it but when I went to the lfs to get some food I decided to look at the goldies. So I walk over and all the tanks are empty except one. I looked in and there was a iridescent shark cruising around, then out of the corner behind a rock this little black moor came swimming out to say hello. Then the shark just came up and just rammed him and the poor little guy went and hid again I couldnt leave him there. Now he is happy swimming around with the other fishes.

Good luck with the new little guy! I don't blame you, I wouldn't have been able to leave him there, either.
