I will probably be getting either a 20 or 29 gallon tank soon. If I get the 20, it will be home to a pair of convicts, but if I I get the 29, it will probably be home to some swordtails, cories, and angels. If I get the 20, I will probably get the Aquaclear 50, but if I get the 29, I am not to sure which filter to get. I am thinking either the Emperor 280, Aquaclear 70 or two filters. My first question is will I have enough for the 20 and my second question is which filter should I get for the 29. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Filter for the 29 I would do an Eheim 2213.

Expensive, but the best.
Cant go wrong with Eheim!

Ditto on the Eheim canister filter. They are fantastic filters and you get the benefit of everything being hidden from sight except the intake tube and the spray bar. Everything else is nicely hidden under the tank inside the tank stand. These filters are also dead silent in their operation so you do not have to listen to a noisey filter. If it is not in your budget to get a canister filter(Eheims tend to be a bit pricey but well worth their weight in gold) then I would recommend the Aquaclear filter to you. You could possibly go with the Aquaclear 70 or two smaller Aquaclears on the same tank. The advantage of two filters going is that if one of them should shut down for any reason, you still will have the other filter going to give the needed filteration necessary to support the life in your aquarium. Also when you are cleaning the media in one filter the other filter still will have all of the necessary good bacteria needed so you will not see a spike in your readings. Just make sure that you only clean one filter at a time and then do the other one a week or two later.

Hope this helps.

personally, i have a 20 long and have 2 hydor bravos on there. good filters, especially since there is no water bypass.
for a 29, i would use 2 aquaclear 50s, one on either end of the tank. thats my 2 cents

by the way, wal mart is offerring the aquatech line of filters at very low prices. they are just marineland penguins without the biowheel. instead, they have a very sturdy white bio-fiber on them, simialr to the whisper's bio-foam idea but in aquatech's case much sturdier. they are perfect for planted tanks as they dont have the bio wheel but come from marineland at a low price with very good bio filtration. i think 2 of the bigger 200 gph filters would cost around 35-40.

I'm not sure if I can afford the XP2, but would like a canister, so should I get the XP1 or the Ehiem 2213? I may be able to get the XP2, but I'm not sure if I will have enough. If I can get the XP2, would it be better than the Ehiem? Also, will I have to get any parts for the canister separately? I will probably order it off drfostersmith.com. Thanks for the help.

Eheims are top of the line filters. It really is just a mater of preferance. I would go with the Eheim classic 2215 if you are considering a canister filteration system.

I found the XP2 on drfostersmith for $84.99, so I will probably go for that. But, I will check out Big Al's too. When I get the XP2, do I have to buy anything such as tubing separately for the filter?
