filter for a 10 gallon tank

Bio-wheels are a bit noisy next to the bed. I'm quite happy with AC 30's for 10 gallon tanks. They make a little bit of noise for the first days, but as soon as all residual air is gone, they will be quiet.

They only have starting problems when they were not maintained properly or the water surface is very low.

Ive got 3 brand new (5 days old) emp 280's and there pretty quiet other then priming. They flow well and with double cartriges they filter the water very well. Imo its not to powerful at all. I have a pair of 280's and a penguin 150 on one of my 29g's and the fish dont seem bothered at all. My personal take on it is a pair of penguin 150's would be a good choice for a 10g or a pair of penguin 200's. Ive run both setups and either works well. Id go with the dual 150's personally. That way you have plenty of reserve capacity. Im sure nobody will agree with my take on filtration but I prefer to have plenty rather then not enough.

well, i agree with you! today, i printed off the internet the price for emperor 280 online, 35.99, and went to the local petsmart and bought the filter! i have had it running now for a few hours and the tanks is now crystal clear. what was once cloudy water that would not dissappear even after 50% water changes 14 days straight has gone away in a matter of hours. i am quite please with this filter. in addition, the noise level is not bad at all. tonite will be the test though as this filter is running in my bedroom.
i would have gotten the penguin 200 but i have had mixed results with the penguins. one penguin 200 was outstanding while a penguin 150 i bought new had its motor die very noisily inside of 2 months. so i decided to buy a filter that has a strong, long-lived reputation following it. i am loving it so far!:)
