Ok in my Dutch Aquarium System there is a built in filter in the back. From reading on here most of you do not use filters except empty for water movement. Do you recommend that I pull out the two filters one is suppose to be for biological and the other is a drip filter for nitrate?

Here is a link to the filter setup...

Also I know I am only in my second week of the cycle but should the protein skimmer produce any foam at this point? Just doesn’t appear to be doing anything I am assuming I will not be able to see and air bubbles coming out of the Wood Air stone. Will I?

Thanks
Greg

I vote for pulling out the filters. If you have a sand bed and plenty of live rock, you won't need them. It will simplify your life.

If I understand the skimmer question, it sounds like you don't see any bubbles from the airstone. You should see a blizzard of tiny bubbles in the skimmer chamber, and you should be getting skimmate in the cup.

From what I understand the skimmer will start producing as soon as there is sufficient waste in the water.

Dave,

I will pull the filters out tonight thanks for the advice and I will get the sand bed 3-4 inches deep it is a little over 1 right now.

Yes, you are right I am not seeing any bubbles at all coming from the wooden airstone. I will try another stone and see if I get a different outcome. It may be the pump though also I guess.

Thanks
Greg

Well it looks like the problem with the skimmer was the air pump. I changed to a different pump now a storm of bubbles. I used an old pump I had from a previous freshwater tank. I will probably need to get a different pump though with a rheostat so that I can adjust the bubble flow.

I also ditched the filters in the tank and added about 2-3 inches of sand to the tank. Now almost a 4 inch sand bed.

Would it hurt if those cocktail shrimp got burried? I can't tell if they are since it is quite cloudy but should know by tonight.

Thanks
Greg
