Before anyone thinks anything, NO, I've not been feeding my tropical fishes any goldfish food.

However, I do want to gauge your comments. I lost an oranda bout 2 months ago and have since change the aquarium to a tropical one. I've got all these goldfish food and flake lying about so I thought, hey maybe I can use them to feed my tropical fishes.

Now, any difference? Well I don't see much difference between tropical fish food and goldfish food. So any objection say if I fed my tropical fishes with TetraFin Gold Japan which is a premium goldfish sinking pellet? Would be good to know your thoughts?

Yeah, I've found by reading ingredients that a lot of fish food is very similar, just labeled differently. If they like it, I'd use it in alternation with some other community food just to make sure they're getting what they need.

I've also googled about and the common feedback that I seem to read are that goldfish food are more vegetable based whereas tropical fish food are more meaty. However, referring back to the ingredients, the protein content of goldfish food are much higher. As vegetables also have protein, so more meaty does mean more protein here.

With my stocking being platies, danios n cories, whom are all omnivores, so there should not be a difference to me feeding them some goldfish food. :)

I actually have been feeding my danios with goldfish food because I was given a tonne of it, and they are fine.. I mix in a little tropical food & bloodworms from time to time.. but they've been fed the stuff for over 6 months with no problem.

Goldfish food is just plain fish food with less protein.

yes you can use it for danios and other fish too id won't harm but you could also give them occassional treat with blood worms or tubifex.. etc

I'm quite surprised with your comment tanker? If you see the ingredients typical analysis that I when I started the thread, you would not have noted that all the goldfish branded food are at least 5% higher in protein than the tropical fish food.:headshake2:

There are different types of protein..

I dont see why not as we old timers had no problems feedign one cheap avail staples before all these fancy foods. Mix it up with others foods. I even fed leftover f/w staples for s/w for many many yrs without ill effects. i dont mean to do such but better than starving , imo.

There's really nothing wrong with feeding fish "goldfish" food. It's labeled that way, but all the ingredients are just about the same. It really boils down to the protein and veggie content. I have a friend that feeds his Goldfish Hikari Massivores just because he had them laying around since he switched from a Gar and Wolf Fish to just Fancy Goldfish. They actually seem to prefer the Massivores, lol!
