Is it ok to feed live mosquito larva to fish? Does it matter what species of mosquito it is? I have a tank full of these wiggly things outside and I was wondering if my fish (angels and livebearers) will apreciate this as a treat. What threat can it cause to the fish?

(Sorry.. no pics of the larva. they are just too small)

Be careful though.. i fed my guppies mosquito larvae and one of the buggers managed to live for a while.

Also be careful when adding them to your tank.. their preferred water is full of parasites.

i suggest catching some in a net (if you have one fine enough), and rinsing them under fresh water before giving them to your fish. they should love the treat!

Thats exactly what I did. But I didnt get the joy of watching them eat the larva. As soo as I put them in, they disappeared! a good 30 of them. My angels were catching them almost instantaneously. The livebearers finished off the rest.

mosquito larvae are an EXCELLENT food source for fish, and are also free.

something else you need to watch out for, is a lot of areas have mosquito abatement departments which spray poisons in the local stagnant waterways in the name of eradicating mosquitos. ensure that the area you get your larvae from has never been sprayed.

also, be careful if you decide to begin raising your own larvae, as (SOME) mosquitos can and do carry harmful diseases, and you would likely be in a bit of trouble if someone from your city gov't found out that the cause of the rising mosquito problem was attributed to that 55 gallon barrel in your backyard.

I live in a place where mosquito is part of the decor as soon as it is night fall.:grinyes:

I dont plan to raise my own larva. I just happen to have a tank outside with plants. In fact I need some fish in it that will "control" the larva. I tried with guppies but 2 out of 4 died within 2 weeks and I placed the remaining 2 back inside. I will try to get some small fish from a river nearby. There are lots of them. I don't know what species they are but the locals call them "millions" because they appear to be always in millions. They look like a dulled down version of danios and are as agitated. If I do get some, I will post a pic.

When I have them available, I feed my cichlid fry mosquito larva and they go nuts for them.
