Endlers- how many, and compatibility?

I've just discovered Endlers and fell in love with them! I'd like to put some in my 5 gallon tank, if possible. My questions is, how many (male) Endlers could go in there comfortably? Would they need a filter (or maybe they'd only need a filter if there was a certain number or more in there?)? I've heard they like livebearer food (what IS that?) and brine shrimp best. What do you Endler owners feed your's?

Also, do you think they'd be compatible with a female betta? I saw kind of an iridescent (sp?) female at Wal Mart I've been thinking about ever since, and I think I'd like to have one again if it would be compatible with the Endlers. Would 2 male Endlers and a female betta be too much?

Thanks for all help! I still haven't gotten ahold of a test kit yet, so it's going to be awhile before I can add fish. Trying to budget all this around Christmas shopping, too now. :thud: Even small tanks are expensive to keep up with! :p

Endlers are great fish, which I suspect will come much more popular in upcoming years! When purchasing Endlers I recommend that you buy at least 3 pairs to get a breeding colony started, because these fish do not live very long. To personalize it, I feed my Endler's flake food, a beef heart mix, frozen brine shrimp, and processed freeze dried krill. Keep in mind that Endlers will eat algae, and are good for keeping algae off of live plants if you choose to have any. Get several females and a few males. I would say that you still need a filter, as you should have with any waste producer. This makes water changes not so much of a chore.

I am going to show you a treat... a new line of these amazing fish. The line is called "California Tiger Endler's Livebearer":

I heard someone say they live about 2 years? What's the common lifespan?

I heard those California Tigers aren't pure Endlers, either. I actually think I may of seen some at Wal Mart labelled as Guppies. Either way, they're very pretty. :) Thanks for the pictures!

I'm not interested in breeding them. I don't have space for large enough tanks, or time and resources (or interest!). And I won't mix them with guppies. :) I really just want a few males!

Those are clearly guppy x endler crosses.

Here's what I feed my endlers (they are omnivores, veggies are important):

Spirulina Flakes
Premium Flakes (1/3 brine shrimp flakes, 1/3 earthworm flakes, 1/3 spirulina)
Tetra ColorBits
Hikari Algae Wafers
Hikari Sinking Wafers
Nutrafin Freeze Dried Tabs

Frozen Daphnia
Frozen Brine Shrimp
Frozen Bloodworms (little bit too large)

Live microworms (excellent food but a lot of work).

Endlers are very peaceful. The better question is will the betta be compatible with the endlers. I would think so but no guarantees.

My brothers will eat anyting you put in the tank. Flakes, bloodworms, brine and pellets are what he feeds them.

Sorry, AFG. Didn't mean to burst any bubbles there. :( I felt really mean telling you I'd seen them at Wal Mart! 1 to 2 years is long enough for me to feel I've gotten my money's worth (and even if they didn't live quite that long, so long as I know I did everything right, and they were apparently happy, I wouldn't have a problem with it). I'm just not a big fan of breeding...

Captain Hook- with all due respect, you're INSANE!! :D I have betta bites, algae wafer sinking pellets (with spirulina), and tropical fish flakes. I can't imagine feeding much more of a variety than that due to cost, right now. Will they be able to live on that?! And thank you bunches for your help. :)

EDIT: Puma, you forgot the apostrophe in "brothers", so I'm sitting here trying to figure out why your brothers would be eating any food you put in the tank. :thud: Whew... I got it. Will have to look into some brine stuff.
