Eheim 2213 - Outflow Line Double-Tap Connectors, Important?

I have an eheim 2213 on my 15 gallon. Because of where I have the spray bar located, though, I was having trouble connecting the outflow tubing to the spray bar because of the rigidity caused by the double tap connectors (would have been nice if they sent the thing with 2 of those elbow pieces). So i took them off.

Unlike the double tap connectors on the inflow tubing, which stop the siphoning when you open up the filter, I don't really see the need for the double tap connectors on the outflow side. Besides maybe controlling flow rate, what are they there fore?

I know that all my spray bars are completely submerged, so I would get back-siphoning through that line as well. If this is not a problem in your situation, maybe you don't need it.

did think of that....yes my spray bar is submerged. so if I turn off the filter and then open the top, water will flow out of the tank and out of the filter head?

you have your filter under your tank in a cabinet or something, though, I'm assuming. because mine is right behind my tank (on my dresser) so the hole where the outflow tube attaches is more or less at the same level (actually a little bit higher) than my tank. I've opened the filter a few times and I've always had the double taps open (makes it easier to open the filter itself) and haven't seen any siphoning thus far.

You will want to keep the disconnects on both sides for maintenance. You want to carry the whole filter to the sink including the motor head. You don't want to leave the motor head lying there stuck to the tank while you do maintenance.

Why not? Thats how I do it.

I should say you could do it however you want but it's not practical.

I for one like to clean the impeller and lube the o ring every once and a while.
It's safer and cleaner to do in a sink than behind or underneath your tank.

Plus I also wouldn't want to carry an open dirty canister to the sink, closed with the top on is much easier and safer.
