Does anyone have a Duncan coral (Duncanopsammia axifuga) otherwise known as a Whisker coral or Daisy coral. Or do you know it by another name? I'm looking to get one but am finding it hard to get some info. I have halide lighting, and established tank etc. I have read that even though they possess zooxanthelae they still require feeding, which is no problem as I also have a sun coral.

Any further info would be appreciated.

there is quite a few websites that sell them if u can't find them at any stores near you. they don't require feedings like sun corals, but grow like weeds if u do feed them regularly. they can be aclimated to just about any light, but should be started low in the tank under indirect light especially if u have halides. i bought mine with 7 heads about a month ago and already 3 new heads have sprouted. here's a pic.

Watch the prices on these as many people sell by "per head" prices. That is just bull.
Wait it out and get a deal. I would not pay more than $10 per head when figuring pricing.

As far as care goes, they are the same as euphyllia species like torch or hammer corals.

Scribble: that is the nicest Duncan I have seen, terrific!

not to hijack but could duncan coral survive in a 20 gallon high with 30 watts of coralife mini compact fluorescent 50/50 lighting and a 15 watt 10,000K fluorescent tube?

Thanks.

I was just looking at duncans and someone is selling some rather nice ones for $12/head I think i might go ahead and take it and hopefully it will produce more heads.

I have an ORA strain from not long after they first came out, or were at least readily availible. It's definatly one of my favorites and grows SO fast when fed a lot, but they do not need to be fed. And they definatly can be acclimated to much higher lighting. I had my cololony on the bottom on my 40 breeder (14"s down...) dead center under a 400 watt radium on a blue line ballast and 2 t5 actinics. Then i had it right under, about half way up in a 10 gallon under a 250 watt HQI on an ice cap and PFO pendant. Right now, they are being held for me by another local reefer from when I took my tanks down. But I'll grab them back soon.
And as far as pricing, the price really does make a difference in pretty much every occurence. The ORA and some of the austrailian ones are nice. The prices in duncans started to come down fast once places like roesmarineworld started selling them for really cheap, but they really dont look anything like the nicer ones. Here is a picture of mine under the 250 watt 10K not long after moving it to my 10 gallon last summer. The tenticles turned very brown under the more yellow lighting, but still pretty nice;

and some from the store where I work. The tenticals are a little short here, as the other kid who works there with me and i each feed them about 4-5 times a day. So they dont really always have a full chance to open and stretch. lol

I paid $20 for a single heas of this one. I probably have around a dozen heads on it now:

They're fun to feed too!
