Driftwood tannin removal boiling?

On a related note I boiled the piece of mopani I have twice and then just stuck it in my tank it leaks tannins but to me its not really that bad.

Well finished last night after that final 7th boiling and incidentally tall lobster pots with built in strainers works excellent for boiling Aqua stuff as you can put the fire on high and it wont over spill and the tall strainer makes getting your stuff out a breeze. Anyway I stuck the specimen in last night and this mooring there is no noticeable change in the water color that I can tell and the wood is still stained. Now I'm going to check my PH before placing in the blue and red corals. Hopefully we will end up with some sort of equilibrium, will post results..

At this 7th boiling the water is much more cleaC so I think I'm at an acceptable limit. Can you tell me if the carbon worked to keep that tannin clear for a normal filter period cleaning (30 days)? Or did you have to do special frequent carbon changes?

I change carbon every two weeks: it's lost its effectiveness as an adsorptive by then. But I only boiled my mopani wood once, and it's done a good job keeping the water free of stain. :thm:

Make sure you do some water changes as well. That really helped my tank clear up again after the wood lost most if the tannin

I also do most of my "dirtier" tank work when my other half isnt home she would kill me and put me in my fish tank.

LOL, in my house I am the other half, the cooking equipment and tanks are mine, and my hubby knows better than to say a word, lol.... :D

You would not believe some of the stuff I have had in my kitchen, baby horses included, lol.

/ sorry couldn't resist

I know, I know, but I swore an oath to love and cherish and so I apologize rather then ask permission lol.

Well I’m telling you its day 2 and not a hint of tannin in the water, I think the high boiling and 7 water changes in the lobster pot aged the dickens out of that piece of wood. But I am stumped, I cant understand why the wood seems to be raising my PH rather then lowering it lol. Are there some driftwoods that raise PH. Now that I did a little research I think this thing is an African wood, probably from the same lake the high PH African cichlids come from lol. Oh well I’m still going to move ahead and install those two dead corals that have been soaking in RO for 2 days. As soon as the tank is finally decent Ill post pics.
