Do freshwater fish eggs move?

Wow a complete breakdown is drastic. Especially considering I saw the first ones less then a week after the tank was set up... Maybe I have the wrong thing? Cause I am on my second algae bloom in 2 months and if these things ate algae I wouldnt be having so many blooms would I?

Also we never actually see them in the tank anymore since having the emperor. The filter sucks them all up so the fish never see them. I have the intake to the filter all the way to the gravel in my tank should I just be using the short intake hose instead?

Might not be daphnia then. If they're not overrunning your tank, I wouldn't worry about it, but it's your comfort level that counts. I would leave things be and not shorten the intake. I guess the first thing would be to somehow get a positive I.D. to know what you are dealing with. Sorry I'm not really much help in that regard. I'd love to get a look at them under my microscope.

Wow, I guess I am back at square one. They are really not overrunning my tank, just over-running my 2 filters. Both my whisper and emperor filters are teaming with these things which causes me to have to clean the filters more. At this point they are just a nuisance.

The fact that they are only in the filter leads me to agree that they are some type of microfauna, rather than eggs. Most likely, they are congregating in the filters because 1) it's a great place to feed--solids get trapped there and 2) no predators in there to go after them. I'm not sure how well it would work, but if there is enough open space in the filter canister, try adding 2-3 ghost shrimp and maybe a couple snails to the filter compartment. Both would compete with the critters for food, and the shrimp might eat them. I doubt the critters are at all harmful, though.

Thanks, I will try that... But wont the ghost shrimp crawl out of there? My emperor filter is brand new and these things somewhow found there way in there as well. The whisper filter came with the tank, and they are on two different ends of the tank.

I never had ghost shrimp before, but I will try it as long as the ghost shrimp dont crawl out of there and start jumping around the place... question is, once i put the ghost shruimp in there, how do I get them out? the baskets of the filter is black plastic and I dont want them to get caught in the impellor or anything.

Has anytone tried to put snails or shrimp in their filter basket before?

moving fish eggs!

Sounds like you have an infestation of some crustaceans similar to daphne, except if they are the type I think they are, they spend their larval stage as parasites on the gills of the fish. I would quick cure the tank, according to the label, they look like little round greyish brown/red (light) and have what appears to be a set of legs or fins that move them around. Get ride of them, they probably came in with the plants. However if you have small fish, they may eat them all for you. lol. shawn

I ask because I have what seems to be "eggs" in my filter, and this is not the first time I have had them in my tank. When I got the tank along with the rest of the fish I saw a few at grave level that would actually MOVE on their own, they looked like round eggy things and had no fins or tail. They just looked like an egg trying really hard to swim. SIze is about 1/16 of an inch and the insides look greyish green like shiny fish "skin." I initially thought something laid eggs and they got mainly eaten but now that I see them again and its a month later I have reason to suspect they are eggs.

Well today sitting on my couch I looked at what seemed like more moving eggs in the filter pad basin (my Whisper filter is clear). I never looked in there before cause when the lights are off in the living room I cant see into it, but tonight I had them on and I saw at LEAST 50 of them squiggling around swimming to and fro inside the filter basket! Some were stuck in the filter floss and were no longer moving. But I dont know what they are! At the bottom of the basket and even at the top it looks like maybe cracked eggshells just floating about. At the time I first saw them (5 weeks ago) I only had tetras (5) in the tank and the silver dollar and 2 catfish. The silver dollar is alone so I know they dont belong to him. Could they be eggs from the tetras?

Since they are so small I cant get a clear picture of them at all but does anyone know if fish eggs move? I dont think they are parasites cause I saw them on the first day I had the tank set up as well, and this was over a month ago.

Hi Shawn, thanks for responding but all of the plants in my tanks are plastic. Which is why I am clueless as to how i got them so fast (less then a week of setup). They also dont have legs at all, they just jumpb about like jumping beans.

I have resolved to try an strain all of them out and see if they return. It will be tedious and I will have to break down the filters but i will try to get to it this weekend and post back with my findings. thanks.
