Cutting Hole in Aquarium Cabinet with full tank on top...

Is this possible?

My stand has two cabinets, but stupidly only one side has a hole for filter/power cables etc. I want to add another cannister filter, but it would have to go outside the tank on the floor in the living room if I couldn't cut a hole.

Should have done it back when i was setting up, but you don't think of these things when they matter I suppose.

Worried that any type of cutting or saw will cause vibrations or something and crack the tank. What about drilling?

Tank sits on a plastic rim and the base of the tank (ie the glass) does not touch the cabinet, it has a criss cross of thick, strong plastic on the bottom which I assume is for support, Don't know if that means anything.

Is it risky?

THANKS!

Just cut the new hole in the exact same spot mirroring the other side. For running cords just use a doorknob drill used for cutting holes in blank doors for doorknobs and deadbolts that you attach to a drill gun, has a small pilot drill in the center then a large round cup shaped saw blade that follows the pilot thought the hole being cut, all you do is press the trigger and push. There should be almost no vibration and the cut will be quick with minimal dust to vacuum later. The drill will simply cut a core out that will have plenty of room for several cords and the largest plugs.

If you are really not up to it just buy an extension cord for $3 and use the same old hole to run your filter cord across to the other side of the cabinet.

:iagree:

Using a door knob bit should do the trick with very little risk unless you have a not so sturdy stand for some reason.

I have drilled holes in cabinets with full tanks on them several times. I have used either a jigsaw or a hole saw as mentioned above. Never any issues to fish or stand.

Do it..no problem.
