I like to have at least one species of livebearer(one male, three female) in each of my community tanks. Also definitely some sort of danio since they are so lively and fun to watch and can survive a fishy cycle. Beyond those, tetra schools(6 or more) are great, and a few cories. I like to have in a community tank top swimmers, middle swimmers, and bottom dwellers so it will be balanced.
I have a couple of community tanks, and my stock lists really appeal to me... plus I get compliments from people that come to my house. These are the combos that I have:
45 gallon, heavily planted
2 pearl gouramis
1 keyhole cichlid
5 harlequin rasboras
5 gold pristella tetras
2 female bettas
3 yo yo loaches
1 clown pleco
55 gallon discus community, heavily planted:
3 discus
5 rummynose tetras
5 green fire tetras
2 apistogramma steindachneri (a breeding pair)
1 tiger pleco
My 45 gallon is very active, and my 55 gallon is very laid back. If live plants are appropriate for the species that you want to keep (you don't want to put them in with plant eating fish or you'll have a real mess), then IMO it really completes the tank with respect to both aesthetics for the aquarist, and a healthy habitat for the fish.

Come on folks, I know you have Ideas, experiences. Let's see some of those beautiful communities you've had. What Fish Work so great togother? What fish seemed to have a beautiful Semi-ecosystem? What colors of fish and gravel and plants became Eye Candy?
Inform us all so that we may STIVE for such beauty in our own Glass Worlds. So that we may walk the path to the happiest fish. Let everyones aquatic life come ALIVE!
(Or whatever.)
My upcoming 38 is going to be a community tank centered around a small group of angels (2 - 3), so I hope to see some good results from this thread as well. (Just posting because I didn't want to be a view without a post )
Hey that works UCF(I bet that will look cool. What kinda decora and plants? Are you going to try to accent the Angel's colors or go for a natural look?)
Sandman, How do those fish look togother. Are they active, skitish?
