I just got in a shipment of cpd's I bought from AB, and the seller threw in 3 clown killies for free! It was a great surprise, as the seller didn't mention he'd be adding any other fish for the winning bid. I really want to keep them but am unsure whether they'll like my hard water, as I've read they like soft to neutral pH levels. Does anyone have any experience with just keeping (not necessarily breeding) these guys? If they can live in more alkaline conditions, will that shorten their lifespans?

About a year ago I had my heart set on get about 6-10 of these bad boys. The lady I purchase from had a personal tragedy and never got any before the wholesaler sold out, so I never got them, but from what I was told and remember researching, they need their own tank or a sufficiently tall tank where the other fish stay near the bottom. I'm thinking like a 29 or 55 if you have other fishes. They do also prefer the lower pH water, and I don't know if many people try to keep them in higher pH. I think that they are a weak species, that's why they need the tank to themselves, and they are also less tolerant of changes from their natural pH.

They make chocolate gouramis look hardy. Stay far, far away, way too fragile a fish. I've tried them 3 times, to instant deaths :tombstone:

I started out with six last summer. I now have two left but they appear healthy and the male is stunningly beautiful. They eat crushed micro pellets and live in a ph of about 6.8. Temps around 80. The ones who died seem to succumb to a dropsy like disease where the scales looked like pinecones.
