My flow on one of my Fluval 305's went way down so I thought it was time to pop the canister - did need a cleaning (35 days since the last), but wasn't the real problem. When I connected the filter back I had a heck of a time getting it to prime (not usually a problem). Finally I pumped out a bunch of gunk from the hose. Filter primed and is now working.

Question: How often do you clean the Fluval hoses (**** corrugations) and is it better just to replace the entire hose rather than fool with cleaning it?

I have had the canister running about 4 or 5 months - but the tank is heavy stocked and planted - the filters work hard!!

Thanks!!

ill take a stab at it again.. (bk to the rescue right??)

I havent cleaned my hoses ever since i setup my canisters and though i cant tell how dirty my fluval hoses are, i can see that my eheim are extra dirty lol The hose is polka dot green/brown..
I will most likely clean the hoses next time i do a canister cleaning. And will either soak the hoses in hot water and then pull a string with a paper towel attached to the other end through the hose to clean it. Or will try and have the garden hose on full blast to kick up all the dirt thats in there.

What kind of hose do you have? that gray coiled one??
You can get new hoses at homedepot for fairly cheap but replacing them every time? thats just a waste of $$

I clean mine about once a year.

Your problem is more than likely the ball valve at the tip of the intake tube being clogged. You can pull it off and disassemble it pretty easy... most times I can get away with just pulling it off and running water from the sink through it back wards and tapping it around until clean. It clogs fairly easy and I have to clean mine about once a month.

Excellent - makes much more sense - the hoses haven't been on long enough to clog (I think / hope). Since it is working fine now should I go ahead and take the ball valve apart (located right on top of the canister - correct?) and clean it up??

As always - thanks to you too BK!

located right at the strainer basket at the tip of the intake... there is a small ball there... the purpose is to keep the intake tube full if you have the filter off and do a water change that exposes the strainer to air.
