I have a 29 gallon planted tank with play sand as substrate. Currently houses 8 tiger barbs and 1 golden barb (came with a used 55g I bought). What kind of centerpiece could I put in this tank that will look good with the tigers and not get eaten alive?

I understand. The tigers came initially with a used 55g I bought off the local FB marketplace. That tank became a rainbow-centered community tank. I tried adding a few barbs (there were initially 5) to deal with aggression issues, but it didn't help so they had to be moved.

Perhaps a dwarf cichlid? A german blue ram could do the trick. Or a krib. They should be able to handle the barbs.

Would love to keep some TBs myself but dont have suitable tank mates in any of my tanks.

Not so sure the tiger barbs won't nip on the pelvic fins of a gourami.
Tiger barb aggression is related to school size, and m/f composition of the school.
I've seen them successfully housed with fish with long finned fish, but the tiger barbs were in large schools (15+) and had only eye for themselves.

I agree that TBs are an entertaining fish for sure. I started with 6 of them in a 29g, but eventually moved them to a 55g. After some months they got the better of one of my big goofy angel fish in the 55 and I had to move the angel to the 29g. I probably wouldn't try that mix again. The TBs are in with 2 SAEs a keyhole cichlid, a couple of old zebra danios and some BN plecos. The keyhole is a good match for them in terms of not taking any grief.

You are not only limited with the TBs, but with a 29gal, limited on the total number and size of fish too.
