Celestial Pearl Danio experiment - success!

Thanks everyone - it has been a pleasant surprize. I will take some pics over the weekend - of the 40 gal tub and the rest. The only filtration I have is the hornwort and I did put the fountain pump in a mesh bag w/bio balls. I have 4 pairs of GBR in the other tub - I am hoping that they will parent raise when I bring them back in - but that is another thread. And yes - they will be for sale when they get bigger.

Have a great Friday!

Here are some pics as promised - from the tub to the tank! I also have some pics of some other "outdoor" experiments. The first pics are of the 40 gallon tub, the gallon growout jars for the little ones and the 30 high w/the bigger ones. The last few pics are of the 40 gallon tub w/GBR's (has anacharis, not hornwort) and my "guppy growout" pond. I love being able to take them outside for the summer.

Wow, Andy, love the stuff. What was in the gallon bottles originally...pickles maybe? Hard to find in glass anymore, everybody seems to have switched to plastic. :(

and the in-ground pond...how do you catch the guppies out of it in the fall? Ever have any of the un-caught survive to overwinter?

that is too awesome, I know of someone who breeds their fancy tail guppies outside and has huge success and the fish get brilliant colors!

Congrats

I must say, I have wanted to do stuff like this, but have alwas been worried to put them outside. I'm worried about parasites and such. Is this a reasonable concern, or am I being over-concerned?

Totally awesome. That pond is gorgeous - it must be fun watching the flashy guppies :)

Thanks all - I don't worry too much about parasites - I figure most tropicals are raised in outdoor ponds/tanks in warmer climates so they should do fine. I bring them in for a few weeks to reacclimate them to tank dwelling so I should catch any problems. One of the gallon jars was for pickles and the other is a plastic jar from wally world - I have a couple of them and they work just fine. I put a minnow trap in the pond to catch the larger ones and when it gets colder I start going out at night w/a headlamp and net for the smaller ones. I can't wait to see what comes out of the pond - I have full black moscow w/full red albinos and a few albino bluegrass females - should be interesting (I hope). I also hope the GBRs will regain some of their wild instincts and parent raise some babies soon - no luck so far. But the CPD's have done great and I should have enough of them from the tub to raise and sell for quite a while. I have a larger pond that I have put a bunch of angels in from time to time - but they are too hard to catch. When we had a real cold snap one year I found about 30 of the most beautiful silvers/marbles half dollar and bigger dead - made me want to cry. I keep them inside only now. One of the nice things about having hundreds of fish at any given moment - you can experiment and not worry too much about it.

Wow, I second everything H2Ogal said!! Especially the part about pics! :thm:

:iagree:

Very cool! They're such awesome little fish. That pond rocks! I bet all those fish will look awesome after being out in the sun all summer.
