Hey guys, I've been feeding my Jack Dempsey cichlid cat food kibbles for about a 3 months now. He's still alive but I wanted to know if there was any problems as long as he kept eating it. He has gotten pretty big and has teeth and everything (bout 3-4 inches, the fish, not the teeth) I used to do the wardley total tropical flakes but it was a joke watching him try and get enough food. I eventually started grabbing huge chunks of the flakes, dipping them in the water and then dropping them in a clump for him to chomp up. I got tired of having smelly fingers and saw the cat food out of the corner of my eye. He didn't like them too much at first but then after it was all he got I guess he just got hungry and went for the kibbles! Talk about cheap fish food... Well prettymuch I was just wondering if I should supplement the catfood with anything else, I figured if it worked for my cat it should work for my fish, why not?
Well thats all for now. Ahh yeah another funny anecdote, I gave him a tiny gold fish to eat and the thing swam there for a whole day and the stupid jack didnt eat him! Eventually I just went back to catfood and took the goldfish out.

Buy some cichlid pellets, there are plenty of types to choose from. What you are feeding not the best and I strongly recomend that you switch to specificaly desinged fish food.

When I was a kid my dad use to make big aquariums of several hundred gallons and more we had several in the basement and alot of Cichlids, I remember part of the feeding routine was simply buying chicken gizards or beef hearts from the store.. they loved these things.

We had lots of Jack Dempsy's .. one of my favorite and very smart fish among other Cichlids.. maybe give those items a try for a treat at least :) Cat food though? .. hmmm Cat food has high Ash content and i'm not sure it's good for fish? .. it's not for dogs so shrugs..

re

My Oscar lived 8 year on cat food. I heard it was better for them then fish food. It was suppost to have less ash.. Now that I am older I think that is a lie. Fish food isn't that much money and it is designed for the fish type you buy it for. I know that there is a huge mark up on it. Now I never feed any of my fish cat food and never will again.
At 8 years old my Osxar stopped eating. he wouldnt eat feeders shimp or nothing. just stopped and die.

Oh yeah he lived off feeders to. Looking back it made no sence. I sometimes bought 100 feeders a week and I was cheap with the fish food. It must have been the lie I beleived.

Woah, they live that long?? If he lived 8 years on cat food... wouldn't that be a good thing?

And to the chicken and beef parts, yuk! I'm sure he would eat it but who wants to deal with all that grossness?
Ooh and also does anyone know if jacks bite hard enough for it to be painful? I keep avoiding him when he goes for my fingers, those teeth scare me. I've got him and a huge plesldfjkamas fish (all i know is it has wierd name starts with p and is a ulgy sucker fish) in a 35/38 gallon wierd bubble tank. It bulges out in a clear bubble, I hate it but its the only one I could find big enough for him. I'll post some pics sometime: here he is!

If I fed it catfood, I would only feed Innova Evo. Supermarket foods are craps for cats... and fish.

back in the day i used to feed my cichlids dog food kibble. i wish i had a comp back them lol i didnt even think of cat food, maybe cuz i didnt have a cat then lol
but the dog food made them huge and vibrant! i sold them back to the petshop and they were amazed at them, when i told them i fed them dog food they were shocked
and best of all it never clouded the water
