the whisper filters i got came with a soft fuzzy white filter cartridge that is like an envelope with carbon in the middle. since i have no use for carbon, i'm wondering if i could cut a little hole in the fuzzy white part and dump the carbon out and replace it with something more suitable for filtration like polyester batting, or broken chips of terracotta?

If im not mistaken, there is a plastic frame arround the "envelope"? It should have a clip at the top that you can pull off and empty out the contents. They have those porcelin media rings I have heard work wonders. Just remember you will go through a mini-cycle, since the carbon does play host to some bacteria. If I am wrong about the plastic frame, then your idea of cutting a hol in it would work too :P Another option is just ditching the insert all together and using the cut to fit filter sponged you find at your petstore. The benifit here is you can use two shquished in there, and if you get a new tank have a pre-cycled filter media ready to go (or use it in a q-tank, throwing it out after Q. period is over)

actually, i was only planning on doing it to the new filter i just put in. i have two HOBs on my 20 gallon, one is the old one i had on the 10g that is all established, the other is brand new. i was going to take the carbon out of the new one and replace it. then once my tank is all established and the new filter has a good colony of bacteria, i need to replace the old cartridge because its getting clogged and really gross, even though i've regularly swished it in tank water to try and remove some of the ickyness, its still slowing down the flow noticably

and yes, it is the kind with the clip, i just didn't know the clip would come off, lol.

When everything else fails, read the manual. Am I the only person in the world that likes to read the entire owner's manual before operating any device? (my girlfriend gets mad at me whenever she asks me for some kind of advice and I tell her to read the manual of whatever she is using)

Nope, Im the same way!
I had a friend get mario cart 64, and he refused to read the manual, just play. So I read it and find out the little trick to get a speed boost out of the turns. I picked up the stick and whooped his butt left and right all day. It took him weeks to figure out how I kept beating him ;)
