I've just been looking at all the canister filters out there. There seems to be quite a few of them out there. I am currently in the process of setting up a 125 gallon fresh water tank for some Oscars, and a few more smaller Cichlids down the road.

What would be your advice on a canister filter for my setup?

hmmm, to me thatd be a tossup among a few favs. alot of people rave about their fluval fx5s, but after seeing that filter inperson, im not impressed at all (looks overpriced). personally, id go with an eheim 2260. you gotta buy the media, yes, but those filters are big honkers that keep that tank clean for many years.

Ok, this is what I don't understand about canister filters.. I read that the XP3 is rated for tank up to 175 gallons. I only have a 125. Why do I need two of them?

The xp3 and Marineland c-360" are the ones most recommended here.
They are cheapest at kensfish.com 125.00 each

I use and I am very happy with cascade 1000's cheaper than those above.
around 70.00 each

Its really about budget and personal preference

I would stay away from the xp5 there are a lot of problems with burnout pumps. You see more off those on ebay than any other filter.

Two things

Oscars are really messy fish.

Learn and remember this, it will save you alot of headache down the road. DO NOT rely on "ratings", most of the time they are waaaay over rated, My Magnum 350 that is on a 29g is "rated" for a 100g, I wouldn't put it on a 100g, not enough filtration. 2 yes, 1, no.

I am debating between a Fluval FX5 (my LFS buddy/marine bioligist guy is trying to persuade me there) or an Eheim 2080 (big bucks!). I am concerned about the reliability factor of the FX5, but the LFS offers a lifetime warranty on Fluval products purchased there. But I have always wanted the Eheim...

2260>2080 for flow, and is cheaper (when you can find it) and holds 18L of media compared to the 2080's ~12L capacity (stupid baskets).

FX5 rated (lots) higher than both Eheims for flow, is as cheap as the 2260 - has ~1.5gallons basket capacity (just over 6L, assuming that's per basket, ~19L total media capacity).
