Ok, I still read tons and tons of posts on pond snails which in turn I have been told are really bladder snails which could actually be a type of pond snail.

Thennnn....I get these mondo snails which has just recently been identified as "real" pond snails. These guys are much larger and almost completely transparent shells. Not to mention pretty kewl looking.

Anyway, other than the obvious visual differences between the two, I would like to get to know the bigger guys a lot better.

I already know that the bladder snails breed like crazy and don't bother the plants at all. Just a nuisance in how quick they multiply. How bout the other guys?

I have another thread out here that has a picture of them. I'll see if I can dig it up right quick and post it here.

Thx

Common names will drive you crazy, lol. I have seen quite a few species and genera referred to as "pond snails". Generally, the two I see called pond snails the most often are Physa species (sounds like you may just have two different species of these), and Viviparus, or trapdoor snails.

I had some "pond snails" which I just figured out are bladder snails.
And I think I just got some actual pond snails as recent hitch-hikers.
Judging by the eggs on the plants (which I haven't bothered to remove), I'm thinking they're quick multipliers. Judging by the health of the plants, I suspect they don't bother healthy plant tissue.
But these are just initial guesses. I'll be watching this thread for more definitive answers!

Wow, very neat Viking snails! :p: I love the horns, too. Never seen such a white/clear snail... Could it be calcium deficiency making the shell thin? How many of these do you have?

I just found some tiny black pond snails in some riccia I have in a bowl, I'm fascinated as I have only ramshorns & mts.

The whole Pond/Bladder Snail can be pretty confusing since a lot of people use the two terms interchangeably and both look very similar. They're two different families though, Pond Snails are Lymnaeidae and Bladder Snails are Physidae.

Warning. Sub-par Photoshop skills ahead.

I haven't kept Pond Snails much, but IME, Bladders seem more prolific and more tolerant of poor conditions. But then again, I haven't kept Pond Snails much.
